E240 - Engine Cutting Out Issue

Dear Users,

I need your help.
I have an E240 1998 Saloon, which has recently developed a problem.
The problem is that when the engine seems to get heated up (After say 30 minutes of constant driving), and you come to a halt the engine cuts out. The Car will not start until it has cooled down.

I have been given a number of explainations for this including
1) This is due to the Fuel pump issue.
2) The Starter Motor needs replacing.
3) Mercedes Benz use a special grease in the starter motor and if the
wrong one is used this can cause a problem.

Can anyone suggest what the issue is and where in North / North West London, I can take the car.

Many Thanks.

Regards
Sanjiv

Methinks the Crankshaft sensor is on its way out. Can't see how the starter motor would affect things..

I'll 'Third' that.
Text book symptoms for the crank Position sensor. Although stopping when stationary is a bit odd - normally cuts out entirely at any revs and leavs you cosating to teh side of the road, but i guess if it's on the way out and missing, then at low revs the engine doesn't have revs to see it until it comes back to life. Then once stopped, lower voltage etc...

When you say it won't restart, does it turn over and not fire or does it refuse to turn over? I'm just trying to understand the logic for the starter motor diagnosis.

Anyway - pop a new CPS on it.

the starter thing is all about when starting, when the starter only runs for a split second then cuts out. the cure for this is, bizzarely, greasing the ring gear. obviously this is not the problem and i will suggest - anyone guess? - the crank sensor. a guess.

Hi,
I had exactly the same problem withm E240, 1998. It cut out after half an hour driving. I had to wait for 5-10mins before I could start the engine again. I took it to MB today. It was diagnosed as faulty Crankshaft Positioning Sensor(CPS) as it cut out while they were checking it. They charged me £200 to renew the sensor. £79 part, rest labour + VAT.
MB admitted that new E class and some older one had a faulty CPS sensor. New cars were recalled for repair.
