I left the car in to get the cats removed, and gear oil done.

it needs a right hand side rocker gasket.

didn't change it yet. .

but. after I got the car back I noticed it sometimes fills the road with pale blue smoke if I rev it over 5k.
really fills the road..
on my way home there now. it did the same but now its off a cylinder...

im thinking it has oiled the plugs somehow but im also thinking it could have broke the rings. or an exhaust valve.

there is 160k on the engine.

thanks in advance

Definitely sounds like oil being burned.
Best take the plugs out and have a look. The colour of the deposit may give you an idea of where the oil is coming from.

I note that you have an lpg conversion on this car, it may be a factor.

After looking at the plugs pop a compression tester on each cylinder and check that they are within spec.

I suspect that it may be oil though the valve train rather than rings.

If the car smokes more on the overrun e.g. when engine braking during hill descent then I'd definitely say rings, but a test is best performed to be sure.

One possibility is the blocked O/S engine breather oil drain down passage, as happens with the M112 engine.

You can check it by removing the O/S rocker cover, and see if the passage drains down OK.
If you see a puddle of oil and water sitting in it, suspect it is blocked.
It is usually necessary to remove the gearbox, ring gear and rear main seal housing to make a good job of unblocking, if needed.

ohh..... sounds expensive...
however, I started the car after an hour of worrying and...
it ran fine..

im thinking it must have shut off one cylinder to save the engine.
I read on another forum that they can do this .
not sure if its right though.

Its not overfilled is it?? Just had to drain 3lts of oil for a customer, that had an mot at kwik fit yesterday, they told her it needed it, but when she left it smoked on acceleration and misfired. Just a thought.

50 grade in your climate??? Hope you meant a 5W/50. A straight 50 would be just about solid in winter over there....
Was not refering to the winter "W" setting.

Yes, 50 grade in our climate. I was refering to the grade 50 (after the W-). Thicker oil is recomended for worn or high oil usage engines.

I was going to use 20/50 oil last time I changed the oil but then I left the car in for some work and my mechanic said 10/40 semi synthetic was the proper oil to use.

I did top up the oil last week though. 1.5 litres..

another oil change would do no harm... thanks for the info everyone.

Buy some Worth (wurth) engine flush, put it in and run the car for 500 miles then change the oil.

Don't forget the known fault I suggested - these engines do not generally have problems with oil smoking other that that.

took both rockers off today.
drain passage at the rear of the o/s head was sitting full of oil.

rocker covers were full of sooty manky crap. cleaned them out ,
tried to clear put the drain passage but kept hitting solid. tried wire and bits of hard tubing. no way through . time for surgery ?

Sadly this is where the gearbox usually needs to come out, to remove the rear main seal housing, to clean out that stupid tiny drain down passage, that turns a 120 degree corner at the end...
