Hi all,
I have just joined this excellent forum and have been reading the scary stories concerning Auto boxes and Glycol probs,

I have just bought a 2004 E270 CDI 5 speed Auto:D and I must say I love it, the only thing that worried me was, when it has been standing overnight and I start it up and go up my drive and turn onto the main road (uphill) the engine reaches around 2500rpm before full take up is achieved as if the torque convertor is slipping!! then after around 500yds I stop at a roundabout and drive off normally and there does'nt seem to be any slippage,

The gearbox changes seamlessly up and down and the manual change works fine, the problem is only on a first cold start, the car has just covered 27,000mls and has full Mercedes service history.

I took it to our local Mercedes dealership who checked the gearbox oil (free of charge) and said it was fine and no faults have been recorded in the computer. the explanation the dealership came up with was that it was normal as the cats have to be warmed up quickly so the box late changes to get the cats up to temp, what do you lads think?.

There is no vibration at all and it never slips when hot, also does this car have the dreaded radiator with the built in gearbox oil cooler?.:(
Thanks for any replies.

The gearbox will hold in gear from cold to warm things up quickly. The date of your car should be well beyond the faulty batch of rads so I would say you are ok.

Hi jberks,
Sorry its a W211.
Regards
Alfie

Hi Alfie, I know - same as mine. They're great aren't they!
I meant is your gearbox switch set in S or W mode (or is it C? - can't remember). If in doubt its displayed on the dash and toggled over using the little button on the top left of the gearshift panel. In W it will 'slip' and teh slip is more pronounced when cold.

Hi again jberks,
Ooh I see what you mean yes I have tried it in both C and S mode and C mode slips more that S mode when cold, Oh and yes I think its a brilliant car, does'nt half pick up its skirts when you floor it he he:p, I had a Jag S type 3ltr petrol and I reckon th Merc could kick its arse in a straight line and far smoother gearbox as well. years ago 1996 to be precise I bought a new E250D 124 series but unfortunately I got the manual version:roll:, although I liked it, it was very sluggish and went through 2 clutch master cylinders and two clutch slave cylinders and 1 set of propshaft centre bearings within 35,000mls, I suppose I drove it pretty hard though, but this W211 is brilliant.:D

It applies to all 211 cars built up to 09-03 it is worth having a look to see the nameplate on the Rad,if you have a Behr, then no problems, if you have a Valeo, I would change it for what they cost.

Have a look and post back Alan

Oooh - you can't be saying that here - according to many, the 124 was the most reliable vehicle since the roman charriot and all that were ever made are still on the road in perfect working order. At the same time. newer mercs like the 211 are so unreliable you'll be lucky to get off the dealer's forecourt with all your body panels attached. Its actually quite refreshing to see an honest appraisal of the 124. Great car but, like any mechanical device, not without its problems. We didn't have a 124 but did have a couple of 123s and as fabulous as they were, I do remember one or two low loader type breakdowns, poor running, misfires and rust. There are a lot of rose tinted attitudes on here. There is another post telling someone to abandon any idea of an E320cdi and get a 124 instead. I remember being in a 300d taxi many years ago. It was so gutless, at one point I thought I was going to have to get out and push!

Hi jberks,
Ha Ha I always tend to say things as they are, the 124 was pretty good but they were very much like a tank,;) I actually sent mine to TB Turbos in Lancs and got it turbocharged to liven it up a bit, it came back a bit better and I was £3000 lighter but it was never a fireball, but my brothers 230CE 1994 124 was though, a relay under the dash failed and the dashboard caught fire he he. I love the W211 in every way so whatever is said about them does,nt bother me too much, the 124 diesel was'nt christened the Studgart taxi for nothing though.

Alfie

E320 CDI gearbox slip

It slips when setting off from standstill in Drive on setting C.
Feels like its is trying hard to move, my friends much higher mileage 320 cdi seems to go much better.
THANKS

Older Citroen Now :-(
I leave my auto in "S" 100% of the time..
Mine certainly can move like a scolded cat when asked to..
I recently "risked all" and let Steve (ST4) drive it.. I think he was impressed.
