Hi everyone,
I am looking for a bit of advise regarding a problem i am experiencing with the gearbox.
When accelerating from between 40 - 60 mph, the rear of the car begins vibrating (shuddering) .
I have been advised that there may be a problem with the gearbox colling system and the coolant may be leaking into the transmission oil.

Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated

Thanks :D

First thing is that you do not drive the car until you know if the radiator has split. since the water operates at a higher presure than the oil cooler the water level should have gone down.
If you have a dip stick for the gearbox the water could be seen, but the chances are that you do not have one, and that means draining the box.

This must be the most stupid arrangment since the invention of the motor car

Thanks for that!

is that the main radiator or is there is there a separate one? If the radiator has split, is it costly to repair?

Thanks

Television was indicating that there is a design 'bodge' on these cars, where the radiator for cooling the water is merged with the cooling of the autobox fluid. If the radiator springs a leak, it pumps pressurised water into your gearbox... no oil, no lubrication, gearbox goes to its makers!

There are a few threads on this problem, just do a quick search.

Just to add... on my MG Montego Turbo, the Turbo was water cooled, and after the first engine blew up, it was replaced by 3 successive gold seal engines, only on the third engine did they find the micro crack in the Turbo - result was that when the Turbo spun up, it would pressurise the water system and water would come out wherever it could, primarily from the header tank! Just goes to show can happen in 'shared' systems!

sorry i don't unterstand your answer

The symptoms of glycol in the gearbox are.

When pulling lightly in top gear at engine RPM of between 1500 and 2500 a humming or droning.

You cannot see in the fluid if there is any glycol content.

about £60 at an indy for a glyco test, all you need to do it send them about 100ml of your ATF and they will check it, takes about 30 minutes to get the results IIRC

My pal has a an E270 CDI Auto ........used to shudder in the back when decreasing speed , he was worried about the transmission......He later then got a blocked CAT. He got the CAT removed and replaced with a pipe..........shuddering stopped.

I think you may find that as a result, the torque converter will be knackered and need replacing.

It is the knackered torque converter that is causing the vibration.

Blocked cat ?

See post........blocked cat , then loud bang......on my pals E270 CDI.

Before it got to this stage he noticed a shudder from the rear when changing gear ( auto ).......it developed into a limp mode problem and the blocked cat. When the CAT was replaced with straight exhaust pipe....the shuddering problem disappeared also..

Regards.............dannyboy:confused:

Since we're on the subject of glycol contamination...
Why not install a simple oil cooler instead of the in-radiator oil cooler? Assuming it can be covered in winter so that is does not run too cold.
