I have an 2002 E270 cdi auto. Recently driving at low speeds the car has started to make a droaning noise. Does this sound like the gear box is going die at any moment.

Ouch Chris,, this sounds like the valeo problem where the antifreeze gets into the gearbox via the rad leaking.

The fault is described as humming or droning at around 1700 ro 2k when pulling lightly.

You can get a glycol check done at any MB dealer, if positive then a new torque converter needed and a new rad, all costing circa £1300 with a little help from MB.

It is a well known issue, and we have many post on the "valeo problem" if you do a search here

Before you panic ......

Malcolm may well be right , but my E270 has always droned a bit at 1700-2000rpm. It was eased a lot with a new set of engine mounts - something of a weak spot on the 270. Given the age of yours I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was due a new set.

Thanks guys I hope it is the engine mounts. I thought the Radiator problem was a 5k job with new gear box and everything?

Almost never the whole box and only the torque converter,,MB have almost stopped helping out on these things.. You could check the make of the rad as the fault does not happen on the Behr rad

Dumb arse question but how do I check the make of the rad?

Unless there is a big arse sticker on it?

If its a Behr it will have a viewable label somewhere around the top

Hello, I wonder about this issue too since I own a 2002 model.
The intercooler indicates "Behr" but does this mean that also the radiator is a Behr??

Hello, in the past few weeks I had two instances that the gearbox dit not select the correct gear, both happened with cold engine/gearbox.

After switching of the engine for a while the problem was gone after the restart.
Still I am concerned about glycol contamination although the VIN and reaction from Malcolm pointed out that I should not be afraid.

Any ideas/reccomendations?

Thanks in advance,
Hans

Through some reason the boxes can lock up and do odd things, and a restart will cure it.

Glycol could not do this, so relax :D:D

It may be worth checking the electrical multi plug for oil contamination. The seals leak and have been replaced under warranty in many cases (inc mine). in some cases the oil can get through the loom into the ECU which could cause some issues.

"Rebooting" happily seems to solve many problems - particularly the ones we don't understand! Its the first thing I try if COMAND malfunctions - and it is all that has ever been required so far.

Any digital and microprocessors can lock up due to a miss read code, the only way to clear them is to power down.

If one signal constantly locks up, its worth checking the connectors in that chain as they are known to give problems. The gearbox one in particular on the 2 end CAN bus pins

Thank you very much for the feed back.

Today is was perfect again, it shifts like silk.

I will have the electric plug checked out and consider to have it flushed according to the Tim Eckhard methodology.

kind regards,

Hans

Problem solved!
The electric plug holder of the auto transmission was leaking and oil was contaminating the electric plug causing funny gear choices.
At the same time I got my transmission flushed according to the Tim Eckart metodology.

It shifts very good again.
regards,
Hans
