Hi Pete,
HA HA HA its ****** awfull the problems ive had eh, but I am starting to see the funny side of it now, I would rather have a knackered Merc than a knackered BM :rolleyes:, I have since found out that its just a basic reminder that its time my car had an emissions check, I went into the service display and reset the sodding thing, the lads at work reckon that the Mercedes Mechanic has made the display appear coz I got him into trouble, but I reckon that he could,nt have done it as he would,nt have had the brains too:lol:.
Nice to hear from you Pete(at least someone is reading my post .

ah well i look out for you now! after what the "einsteins" at our local did with your SBC pump, i just have to keep checking to see what other calamities you have (none i hope) or more to the point if Sytners or MB ever got back to you regarding the first pump they fitted! ive worked with apprentices with more sense than that! im starting to think its time to dust down my toolbox again and go back to it full time, now that theres a living to be earned instead of barely surviving! almost 4 years since they turned me down for workshop controllers job! ive been doing other things but struggling to make ends meet now so on the lookout for work!

besides, if you didnt laugh, you'd cry!

id like to set up on my own, but really dont have the money or premises etc to do it. im trying to talk a few family members to help out a little with funds if the right premises/location can be found, or an established place can be aquired before it closes due to retirement. may not be in carlisle though as im not from here originally! see what happens in the future i guess! good luck! i think you may need it!

I agree SAM-UNIT we could do with a good Independent in or around Cumbria, It took me a few years to build up the courage to start my own business and we have been going 27yrs now, still not a millionaire and never will be, but it can be rewarding being the boss. (SOMETIMES);).

GO FOR IT PETE.

its getting serious thought. only thing is theres an MB dealer and an indy in carlisle. everyone deals with the only other brand i know well enough (ford). as i said its finding the funding thats my main concern as id need premises, equipment etc as your only too aware! i admit im not the quickest with a spanner, but i wasnt trained in quick. i was trained in quality. something that seems to be lacking nowadays! it seems nowadays, especially when youre starting up, that you need to specialise in something , so that people notice you and come to you. seems to be the case round here anyhow. my problem is, working out what? as ive said there are MB people and ford people out there. i could combine the 2, but how do i get people to try coming to me instead of elsewhere? ive thought about this long and hard. setting up myself. thought about remapping like gcl does as no one really seems to do that much round here, not custom maps anyhow. plenty do generic maps! smart repairs including interior repairs alloys etc. all have been thought about, but cant work out what my best option(s) is/are! any thoughts/ advice greatly appreciated!

Hi Pete,

When I started out I was a Television Engineer and worked around most TV shops in Carlisle and Whitehaven/Cockermouth, I used to be called in to do all the Grundigs and Telefunkens and Sony sets because their Engineers hated them, I decided I would ask all the companies I done work for, if they would use my services if I set up a workshop, and as long as they would all keep me going I would only advertise in Yellow pages and nowhere else, and I also promised I would not sell any TV/VCRs etc that they sold, luckily they all agreed and I still work for most of them now 27yrs on albeit behind the scenes. it may be an idea to ask around a few of the small garages if they would send work your way when they are busy, in return you could help them with your technical expertise, I know quite a few people in and around Carlisle that would welcome a reliable quality service on their vehicles, me for one.;)
It does take a bit of bottle and you have to be prepared to be told to pi55 off, chipping vehicles would be a good start also , I know Nick Hayes who is an agent for Turbochips and used to be an agent for Superchips has done well for himself in our area and is always busy, lately he has been chipping lorries and it seems he earns good money, you could always buy Diesel Car magazine and look up all the companies advertising in there for people to set up as agents,;)
Hope this drivel helps.
Regards
Alfie B

Turbopete,

There are a lot of dealerships going under in Ireland and a lot of recent workshop equipment coming on the market. It may be worth looking further afield for buying in equipment. The big mistake people often make is going out and leasing or borrowing for brand new equipment across the board. If you acquire a mix at a reasonable price replacement and repairs can be met out of cash flow, usually related to turnover and use rather than being fixed overheads. Quiet month means little repairs whereas a quiet month is a nightmare with high fixed costs.

Best time to go your own is when the arse is out of the market, you can only go up.
