Hi All, just experiencing juddering on acceleration!!, thought it may have been because it need a service, but having had that, is slightly better but still there. Has anyone experienced this before or any idea what may be causing this? The car is an E270 CDI automatic on a '03' plate with 92k on the clock.

Hello and welcome, would you also say that there is a humming or droning sound when pulling at around 2600-2000 RPM

Thank Malcom, possibly a droning sound rather than humming.

I have a horrible feeling that it will be the glycol leaking into the gearbox.

The first thing to do is to get e glycol check at a MB dealer, its the only way that you will know

what is glycol?

I have recently had all five injectors replaced as they had leak off and the dealer also said the gearbox was slighlty weeping oil and the front and back seals needed replacing. Took it to an indie and he said nothing to worry about!! could this be related?

No nothing to do with any of that. This is a a fault where the radiator leaks the cooling water into the gearbox cooler, the effect is to raise the clutch faces on the torque converter, and it is this that gives the fault.

The cure is a new torque converter and rad

It applies to cars built up to 09-03

MB dealers are not good news for these jobs and a rip off, any indie would have done that job at a fraction of that price, the whole point being that it is doubtful if you needed more the 2 MB change them all and you do not get new ones, they have been sent away and reconditioned. I hate answering these things.

If it was an engine mount, would they have not picked this up on a service??

With an engine mount it throws the drive train out of line, causing the propshaft to move more than normal.

I have been thinking on this, if the rad is leaking, if the rad was changed, would the clutch faces on the converter settle down again, see if any of the techies read this

Sadly I dont think they do Malcolm.

On early cases of this problem, we tried just replacing rad and flushing, but they only tend to get worse as the friction surfaces deteriorate further and come back shortly after.

On serious cases the sump pan will have a layer of sludge in the bottom, the lining turned into dust!!
