GALVANISING OF MERCEDES CARS

It is often asked, when did Mercedes start galvanising the steel panels of their cars. Some threads refer to Mercedes and BMW beginning galvanising in 2004. I managed to get-from an unimpeachable source- the detailed picture concerning Mercedes and posted it in the threads above and set out the picture model by model. Here is the info on the E class: -

E CLASS -211 series- saloon and estates: -

All steel panels were galvanised from Quarter 1, 2003, production onwards.
During the previous quarter (Q4, 2002) the process was gradually introduced
on the production line and therefore some vehicles were galvanised during
this lead-up period, but not all.

Remember to check build date and not date of first registration.

half of it is aluminium anyway so even less to worry about...

Do you happen to know which parts are aluminium? And some are plastic -any info there, please?

Hi Hawk,
on the 211, the bonnet, front wings and boot lid are all aluminium. The bottom half of the boot lid is plastic (with some form of metal backing I assume) shell, doors, roof and rear wings (&wheelarches) will be steel.

Thanks for that. I have posted your info on the sticky on galvanising in the Bodywork section -hope you don't mind.

I assume the alloy and plastic are used mainly to save weight rather than for corrosion reasons. Expensive compared with steel.

Aluminum is not the end all to rust. It must be etch primed otherwise aluminum can rot,,and that is 10 times harder to repair. Aluminum cannot be galvanized, only etch primed, this is a process where there is acid in this primer that eats into the surface to give a good bond.

Aluminum is a strange material, if you bend it about, then it gets harder, it is generally quite stable, rot sets in if you damage the harder outer skin. Anodizing hardens this skin even more

Just as a point of interest, the 230 SL only have steel rear wings,,all of the rest is aluminum. In spite of that the car still weighs in at 2 tons

My car seems to be in the "grey area" because it was # 2309 in the W211 series. Is there a way to find out if the car is/was treated? I wonder if one can see this underneath the car somehow.

regards, Hans

Just check the build date. If it was built in 2003 it is galvanised.

Mine is most probabely build late 2001 since it was delivered at the dealer in march 2002. Is there a way to figure out the production date using the VIN #?

I found this on the site:
Delivery date 28.02.02

Does this mean that the car was produced in that particular week? Week 9/2002??

In reality yes, and no known reason to be otherwise, the cars have never been stockpiled

Malcolm and others, I have put in my VIN number and am struck by the many errors compared with the actual MB datasheet for the car (which I have).

Here are just some examples
The Russian site shows that I have option “619 xenon headlight omitted” whereas in reality 619 is the cornering light facility via the foglights (they angle when you turn left or right)

The Russian site does not show that I have

618 BI-XENON HEADLAMPS FOR LEFT-HAND TRAFFIC

The Russian site shows me as having “ 666 10-hole light alloy wheels with wide tires (с 01.06.1997)”

Whereas the MB datasheet shows 666 as PACKAGING FOR SHIPPING VEHICLES W/O TIE-DOWN HOOKS.

The Russian site shows me as having “690 blue heat-insulating glass all round, rear window (laminated safety glass) (с 01.10.1995)” whereas the MB datasheet shows 690 as the emergency spare wheel.

The Russian site shows “275 Front seat lowered and memory” whereas the MB datasheet shows 275 as Memory Package for drivers seat. There is no option to have the front seat lowered.

I’m amazed how inaccurate the Russian site is –at least on my car.

Mine as well most things are correct, but it shows my car as having a cloth interior when in fact it is Leather. Dont understand that.
