E280 avantgarde 2000 s210
I have a 2000 e280 avantgarde estate s210. I am getting a rattle from the rear when I go over bumps. I had Merc specialist look at it who still can't diagnose the problem. I am not happy with them because they told me to change the sub frame bushes and charged £150. Have been reading some stuff on the net but not really sure what to make of the problem. I think it might be the shocks/struts.

Ok my questions:
Could it be anything else?
I have a similar car for spares (e240 1999 elegance) and the shocks on their are fine, could use them on the avantgarde?
Any ideas or thoughts welcomed

Thanks

One point to check, which often gets missed is rear exhaust heat shields.
The mountings corrode through - easy fix with oversized washers and instant gasket (to go between washer and the heatshield, as it helps prevent further corrosion).

Also check for missing exhaust hangers.

If you're unsure, grab the exhaust end and give it a pull up and down - any loose bits will rattle.

Other things to check - broken rear springs - look for sharp edges on the bottom coil as a sign of a break.

E280 2000 s210 rattle from rear when going over bumps and potholes

Thanks for the advice brandwooddixon.

I had all you mention checked by the garage that did the subframe bushes. Unfortunatly Still rattling.

Could it be the bushes on top of the struts. The rattle happens after it hits the pot holes.

Sorry for taking so
Long to get back to feedback, just been waiting to get back into the garage.

Will share the fix if and when sorted, in the meantime if you or any members have any further ideas please share.

Thanks

Can you hear the rattle if you manually bounce the back end with the car stationary?
I wouldn't think that it would be bushes as these would show as being loose and they tend to thump rather than rattle when worn.
I guess that you've already eliminated there being anything loose inside the car e.g. wheell locking nut in the spare wheel well?
Have you checked for movement in the boot door, sometimes these need adjustment?
