It sounds like the ignition barrel is faulty. Do you have normal electrical functions you would expect, in positions 1 (accessory) and 2 (normal running), as well as 3 (start)?

Had the same on a C class. Gear is stuck in P as it needs the key to turn to release it. In my case, the barrel had collapsed internally - they key went in but wouldn't turn.

Sorry - had the old metal key in mind. Issue is the same though - no key - no gearbox.

Mine did something similar recently - put key in and ...nothing. Got quite worried but on the 4th attempt, everything whirred into life and its been fine since.
Do you have another key or your emergency key? Tried shaking the steering wheel in case the locking solenoid is stuck? I suspect that if the solenoid doesn't release, it won't allow you to turn the key as a safety measure - hence the clicks and whirrs you normally get when you first put the key in.

If none of the above works, I'd try disconnecting the battery, leaving for 1 hour and reconnecting again - may reset whatever has got confused.

Failing that, its going to be an electronics issue and I'd be handing it to someone with the necessary diagnostic kit (specialist/dealer). It's not unheard of for the electronic lock module to fail - there is an old one on display on my specialists reception desk that he's replaced at some point.
