E280 CDI
Hello all, I wonder if anyone can help, I own a 2006 E280 CDI with 48k on the clock with FSH.
The other day as I accelerated to pass another car it missed a beat and hesitated, once I got onto the slip road to join the motorway it went into a limp home mode and 50mph is all it would do, at that time no engine management lights were on. I stopped on the hard shoulder, switched it off and started it back up, re-started my journey with no issues with full power etc. I carried on with my journey down south and all seemed fine. The next day I called into a Merc dealer and explained what happened. They were kind enough to check the car on their diagnostic system.

Feedback from the service manager was all was not well and the turbo might need replacing and one of the sensors in the manifold may have been knocked out. So how much ? I asked.....he said @ £2500 to replace the turbo.

So with this in mind I carried on my journey of another 400 miles and the old girl never missed a beat once, I have just driven it back from Kent to Yorkshire at quite a pace with no issues. Although the fuel consumption seems to have dropped off slightly 40 MPG at 70 -80 mph etc.

So where do I go from here, try another dealer to get them to see if they come up with the same answer, or trade her in for another, seems a shame its a great car and I love driving it, but with only 48k on the clock is this normal for a 2006 E280, has anyone had the same experience? any advice would be great, thanks

I'm no expert on the V6's but search on here for "inlet port shutoff motor" and/or "turbo seals" and see if those symptoms match.

It is a common problem with the V6 diesels.

P.S. Edit to add - don't use a dealer - get your local indie on the case!

Probably because they would prove the turbo didn't need replacing!

It's very rare that the turbo itself needs replacing, there is a exhaust back pressure sensor near the egr valve that is a common problem, this can make the car kangeroo, and can also throw a charge pressure regulator fault up as well. This isn't expensive to fix. The charge pressure regulator is more expensive, merc will tell you that you have to buy a complete turbo as wil alot of places but they are available separately, for around £250. The turbo coukd be sticking and can often be cleaned out with only a labour charge. The last thing is the inlet port shutoff motor, this can fail did to oil leaking onto it from the air intake pipe (very very common) sometime the fault code will be accurate and say inlet port motor but sometimes will say charge pressure regulator as they are in the same circuit! All in all its not really bad news and nowhere near the price merc quoted!!!!. Find a good Indy near you and I'm sure you will be happy with the result!!

Be prepared to travel for the services of a decent indy. (I do).
Even if it means you treat yourself to a mini break away.
Still less expensive than going to a main dealership.
Above all dont panick..

Thanks for all your help, I have had a local Merc specialist run it on their diagnostic machine and there does seem to be a faulty sensor. He is going to change that £200 plus fitting, but while he is on he is going to check some seals and the port shut off valve, so hopefully he can resolve it.
What does concern me is i took my car into the Mercedes dealer in Weybridge and was told it needs a new Turbo.....work that out.

Will keep you posted on how I get on.

All as an update, took the car into Merc Spec in Middlesborough, found them very helpful, they ran the car on their diagnostic system, main fault was LAMDA sensor so was changed. Checked the port shut off valve and replaced some seals that were allowing oil to drop onto valve. They also did a mod to stop oil in the future, it seems to be running like a dream so far. Total £550, much better than £2.5k dealer wanted to change turbo etc, much happier.
