Hi All
I've just bought a E290, 1997 Turbo diesel estate. The rear tailgate doesnt stay up and is very heavy to lift so I suspect it needs replacement struts but its not obvious to me how to tackle this. Can anyone tell me if this is an easy task to complete?

thanks
Ian

When I frast bought the car, I loved it.... Knowing there is so much wrong with it, I started hating it, really hating it. But I'm now past that and think, well, repair everything and you have a really nice car. So I had a look at replacing the strus on the tailgate today.. Took the trim off inside and supported the door with a piece of wood. Started undoing the bolts on one side......... I suspect the experienced amon ou will be knowing what happened next.... As soon as both of the bolts on one side were free, the door shot forward, twisting upward as it was still retained on the other side. Cribbens! Managed to get both bolts back in. I presume you need to replace these one at a time. but I also will need to get the door aligned as currently, it strikes the lock bar on the body to close to one side and is very difficult to open as a consequence.

I really appreciate the help thus far.

Ian

Loads! Essentially my knowedge stops at open-close. I'm going to move the strike plate on the car body a little to stop the fouling of the catch, but I do also need to be able to replace the struts. Is it easy to move centralise the e rear door?

thanks

You can see the marks on the hinge and locks where they were previously fitted if you look carefully

Yes, lining them up with hte old position not an issue but what if that position was not correct. Would it be the weak struts that cause the taligate to close too much to one side asnd this correctsitself with brand new struts? Or do I have to do something else with the brackets?

cheers

I will have the correct instruction that I can print off, the struts should not affect it.

See what I can do later in the day

Ok, time to revive this thread as my brake lights now work:)
Going to get these ordered? Is there an easy way of knowing which ones ~I need without having to take the old ones out?

cheers
