E300 D to a C180/200 ?

I am thinking of changing the wifes E300d estate (1994)for either a c180 orc200 estate.Thats the easy bit , all my mercs up to now have been auto , but i keep hearing about problems with the c class box's should i be worried?I would rather have a manual this time to be safe but the old girl(32 she'll kill me if she see's this)does'nt like the idea of a manual box with the foot handbrake.
