Hello people,

I recently bought a lovely almost rust free 210 e300 diesel with only 94,000 miles by only 1 registered keeper. I usually work with old Japanese 4x4s and don't have too much experience with Merc diesels.

It has no apparent starting problem and starts without drama hot or cold.

Problems / symptoms:
1) the EDC light comes on every time I start it (clears with R button)
2) ONLY on cold start there is blue smoke from the exhaust for a few seconds which clears within 10 seconds at idle.
3) there is a knock / rattle from the top of the engine - most prominent at cold start and between 1000-1500 rpm.
4) 2 vacuum pipes are not connected to anything (from the accelerator thing on the passenger front wing)
5) Driving down the motorway the day I bought it I floored it to see what it does, around 2500 rpm I noticed it was jerking as if about to run out of diesel and there were puffs of blue smoke in the rear view mirror, drove it for 60 miles and this happened about 4/5 times, each time I felt loss of power with the jerking, I realised if I accelerate harder it would clear itself before repeating a few miles down the road. It would happily drive at 70mph (90mph on a private stretch) until the jerking episode again)
6) Blue smoke from PCV pipes (I think it is overdue an oil change..maybe?)

What have I done so far?
I have changed both fuel filters (filled with diesel treatment) new air filter, cleaned EGR and intake (not much gunk as this is a none turbo) I also added a valve / lifter cleaner into the oil (not changed oil yet).

I would be grateful if anyone can help address any of these problems as I want to sort it out and keep it for a while.

VIDEOS of this car and above mentioned issues:
1) The day I cleaned out the egr and intake, no intake pipe or egr valve in this video.

2) All back together and after 65 miles with valve/tappet cleaner in the engine oil.

It sounds as if one of more of the injectors have gone.

They remain under pressure once the engine is switched off so will leak into the cylinder if worn. This may cause the blue smoke on start up.

You also seem to have a fair amount of crank case pressure, oil mist from this could also lead to blue smoke on running/start up.

If the car has spent its life poodling around town the rings maybe stuck a bit leading to the above pressure. Water misting into the engine when running can help with this (google water injection/cleaning).

I would say you have 2 faults here.

One maybe the needle lift sensor in injector 1.

And the knocking noise is from the poly v belt tensioner and shock absorber. The bushes on them wear. Quite a common issue.

You can run it on bio if you want, but it wont change your faults.

knock

on tickover slacken each injector union off in turn if the knock goes away thats your faulty one , the knock seems too harsh for the damper bushes but easy to check visually anyway, you could also try a good dose of injector cleaner ie fill the filter

Yes I tried that, loosening injectors 4 and 5 did reduce the knock slightly.

Definitely not the tension shockers.

It does sound like injector 'nailing'which is similar in some ways to the 'pinking' on petrol engines, although not so common these days.

Due to a worn pintle and seat it will either delay or pre-ignite ignition which causes the metallic knocking sound or nailing.

Best bet is to send them off to somewhere like United Diesel who offer a complete recondition serves for around 35 pounds per injector.

faz, the vacuum pipes on that side of the engine (and that length) are likely to connect to the resonance valves.

One is located under the intake manifold where it meets the top crossover pipe.

jerking

my 98 hilux exhibited similar symptoms erratic acceleration blue smoke etc which I finally narrowed down to partially blocked guaze in the banjo bolt/return restrictor on back of pump, could your spring be dodgy on the pump return outlet just a thought

I know the Toyota gauze filters as I work with them a lot, I think the Germans made theirs more complicated and harder to pin down  tho' but maybe someone here can let us know if there is such a thing on these.

Have you checked that there's not more than one connection to each valve or box - somewhere under there you may find a junction box connecting more than one vacuum pipe.

I have one on my OM606 W124.

You may find they re for an option not fitted to your car in which case plug them otherwise the rest of the system will lose vacuum.

Also check you dont have too many bubbles in the fuel lines as this can cause mild nailing at times.

Will take a look on weekend as I will be taking off the manifold to water jet the cylinders to de carbon.

There are NO bubbles in the pipes.
Thanks

that return spring is in the fitting on the back of the pump facing the engine where the return pipe comes out and back up to the main filter return pipe
