hello
i have recently bought a E300 TD 1999, It is now stuck in second and can select reverse, I made a dipstick from flexy cord and marked 65mm for max and 54mm for min and found out my auto fluid is very low, on investigation i found a leaking cooler tranmission pipe from lower drivers side radiator.I changed the connector to the flexy to rad and is still leaking. are my looking at a new radiator as i was thinking of using quiksteel as a tempary fix. also if i change the radiator and the auto fluid and filter , disconnect the battery and connect again will it come out of limp mode,
P.S it has a full merc dealer history to 158,000 mile`s now showing 161,000 miles, rang dealer and they tell me that there is no record of the autofluid been changed and said this is sometimes the case, Is this right?

It may not be the pipe leaking, it may be at the banjo bolt at the radiator.

Top pipe is checked by removing a small plastic circle next to the headlamp. Bottom pipe is checked by dropping the oil cooler a few inches, and looking through the towhook hole.

Its a common fault that the two transmission oil cooler pipes rot on W210's, I would be suprised if the banjo is leaking, I replaced both pipes on my E300TD for about £45 from the main agents, its not a difficult job if you are handy with the spanners!

Hello and thanks Parrot
I am very gratefull for your help and i have now sorted the leak following your very well explained instructions.
However, after filling the fluid to the proper max limit then disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes i took the beast for a test drive and it is still stuck in limp mode(second gear). Is there anything i can do to get it out of limp mode bar bringing it to the dealer, What do you suggest ?

It may just need the codes clearing. What part of the country are you in, someone here will know an independant that will help.

Don't go to the dealer, they'll charge a fortune for 5 minutes work.

If you know someone with an OBDII scanner they may be able to reset the codes, although I'm not sure if it has to be done on the STAR system or not.

ECU is on the transmission tunnel under the gear lever IIRC. Somewhere around there anyway, inside of the car.

Disconnect the MAF and see how it goes

Hi Malcoln
found the MAF airflow sensor disconnectede and took for a test drive , still stays in second gear but loss of power. plugged it back in and the still stays in second and unlike other limp modes the car is very responsive and will rev to max revs, any more suggestions as it`s gone over my head at the moment.

The only other thing is to get the fault codes read out for the gearbox as Parrot

The saga continues
tested car on a OBD11 scanner today but the mechanic said the round plug under the bonnet was not compatable with his scanner, he tried pluging in wire to the reevant ports on the plug to no avail, As Parrot has told me i will need a star diagnostic tool. I live in swindon wiltshire does anyone no an indie in the area with this equipment.

I had exactly the same thing with my C250TD. Replaced both steel pipes from radiator and both flexi's,replaced radiator as well. Filled with fresh MB fluid and filter. Job was a good'un.

Many thanks must go to Mick Stanton at Stanton Auto's in Tonbridge for all his hard work. :D
