I've seen a E300 on Auto Trader that looks reasonably promising. One thing that struck me from the photos is that it appears to be sitting very high over the rear axle? Much more so than other W124's I've seen.

Any reason why the ride height might be like this?

I haven't viewed the car yet, so just looking for opinions, maybe it's the photos!

Quite a small pic and hard to see. Could be someone fitted the wrong rear springs, or if it has a towbar heavier duty springs could have been fitted on purpose

None at the monent, but there's an OM642 in the Jeep Grand Cherokee!
I'd say it's not the photo - that rear-end is sticking up a bit

Could be non-standard springs - there's no towbar, but it could have been removed to increase the chance of a sale! 89k miles is low (if genuine), but £2950 is a very strong asking price for a W124 saloon.

The details say: "full black leather seats", but that interior looks rather like MB-Tex. Many will say that's no bad thing (!), but it ought to be clarified.

Again in the details, it's unlikely to have passenger and front side airbags - or even a Quickclear heated windscreen!

S80 Thanks for the feedback - You're right, on closer inspection interior does look more like Tex. That would count me out, if it is.

So you reckon it's pricey for a W124 saloon?

I'm pretty new to W124 Mercs, but prices seem all over the shop. Ranging from £1k to £5k for what looks on paper similar spec/condition cars.

I was willing to go up to £5000 max, but there seems to be a fair few cars out there that aren't selling at that price. I want a cherished car, preferably a 280/300/320 saloon but I don't want to pay over the odds

You're welcome :)

Yes, prices do vary widely - possibly more so for the saloon models than coupés or estates. The estates are still valued for their load-lugging abilities, the coupés would like to be seen as 'future classics' - so that leaves the saloons as the 'Cinderella' offering. The regular trade just sees them as old cars, or possibly try to jump on the bandwagon, stick on some tyre black and an outlandish price tag - on the off chance someone will bite

I love my 280E saloon, but wih rusty front wings it's not worth more than £500 at best. Mind you, I only paid £600 for it three years ago......

If it is leather it would be the early type leather which is striped in pattern like tex, either way not that nice to look at compared to the later leather.
Im personally more along the lines of "S80" and his £600 280e rather than spend £5k on one, thats a hell of a lot of repair money in the bank, and the mechanicals on a 80k mile or 200k mile will be fine, its the bodywork to watch on either, particually the subframe mounts, and thats age not milage.
I wouldnt worry about the rear height though, only takes 20 mins and 'normal' tools to change a rear spring.

Thats a very early W124, what year is it?

The car come out mid 1986, the plastic side panels where the first face lift for 1990 along with a few changes inside.

it will not be Indian because of engine size and because of year.

It may have the option of self level rear suspension however.

Thye height can be adjusted somewhat by the link onto the anti roll bar.

I think the ride height is spot on but the o/s/f spring may be broken as that corner is sitting low. Wouldn't surprise me if it had SLS - it has lots of other toys

Thanks for all the responses, folks! I was thinking that the excessive rear ride height might have something to do with self levelling suspension. Knowing precisely nothing about sls, is is easy to rectify something like this?

In the meantime I've found several more potential 124's, so might just pass over this one.

Paul Hayward - That W123 you linked to is gorgeous. Wish you hadn't done that!
