I'm quite new to mercedes, and this is my first post and wonder if anyone can help. I was recently given an 1989 G E300 W124 saloon in fantastic condition wth full mercedes history, A Brabus Body Kit and Brabus Monoblock II Alloys, it has only had the one owner from new. The only problem is it had been stored for two years and wasn't running, so I have changed the Oil, filters, Coil, Dizzy Cap, the HT leads and spark leads, and finally battery and spark plugs. The car now fires first time everytime, although when I try to drive it, if I pull away exceptionally slowly it will gradually build up speed, although If a try to put my foot down at a normal level, its splutters, lurches badly and just cuts out. Does anyone know what it could be or has anyone experienced anything similiar?

Is that the plate above the throttle body???? I was looking at that earlier with the air box off, it moves reasonably well when its being reved up although as soon as you touch it it cuts out completely.

Do you mean the butterfly inside the throttle body? That could probably benefit from a clean aswell, but no the air slide is an aluminium cylinder approx 3cm diam and 10cm long held between rubber hoses, and quite easy to remove. It´s been a long time since I worked on these though! It´s mounted on top of the inlet manifold under the airfilter.
You mentioned it cutting out, that´s probably just because you´re restricting the airflow.

dare I suggest fuel

if you haven't had fresh fuel in it for 2 years, that's bound to give you some trouble.

The fuel tank was empty when I got is so it had fresh fuel in it (£35.00) it lunges at 3000 revs badly and wont go when moving but will rev to red line when static, I'll remove the air slide and see now.
Thanks

Thanks for the help guys, I found a split breather today, split underneath coming from the the block into an unknown sensor, so I have patched it and its 100% better although I still need a new pipe, does anyone know what that bit is? Its under the air box, towards the front, connects to a solenoid of some sort, and then into a sensor which has a fuel line into it? Sorry to be vague but I'm not a pro!

The upside of all this work is that you'll have a car that runs well and you will know the car a lot better at the end of it
