HI, I HAVE A E300D 1996 "N" MERCEDES
THE PROBLEM I HAVE IS IT CUTS OUT, THE ENGINE STOPS. IF YOU THEN TURN THE KEY OFF THEN RE-START IT STARTS UP AND RUNS FINE. ITS BEEN INTO MERCEDES AND THEY HAVE SAID THERE IS NO FAULT.
I HAVE CHANGED THE FUEL FILTER AND AIR FILTER.
THE PREVIOUS OWNER SAID IT DID IT MORE IN THE WET BUT ITS HAPPENED TO ME IN THE DRY AND TICKING OVER IN THE GARAGE. IF ANYONE HAS HAD THIS FAULT AND KNOW THE FIX GIVE US A SHOUT I WOULD APPRECIATE IT. REGARDS  JOHN

E300D CUTTING OUT

this seems to be a similar problem to mine- posted today 'stalling'- and i am unable to get any help from garages apart from to continue driving until it completely conks out and then call AA. This doesn't inspire me to drive in the rush hour. i have trawled thru previous postings and there are some similar problems suggested to be related to resistance and voltages of the KE injection system- whatever that is. The car went fine today but i'm not convinced. If i get any further i will let you know

First thing I would do is check out all the basics. Dist, wires, rotor etc. Next, if the car has a distributor check the stator or pick up coil in the distributor. These do go bad and can cause stalling. Seldom a sensor will shut down the vehicle. Sensors can cause vehicle to run erratic however. Last would be the ignition module which merc has it's own name and is very expensive. Do check the previous. A bad O2 sensor can cause a vehicle to run very rich or very lean, but since no error codes are evident I doubt this would be the problem. Has fuel pressure been checked? Stalling will occur if improper fuel pressure is maintained (bad or faulty pump). Good luck and I hope you find your problem.

E300D CUTTING OUT

Hi Just a quick update.
I filled the car up with fuel and took it for a 25 -30 mile drive, and put my foot down a bit, it failed tree times.
The first two times i turned the key off then on and the car started. The third time it took about 30 secs to get it going. The first time it stopped the electric fuel pump warning came on, but not the other times.
Its a 96  E300 Deisel Auto

To John

We have same problem as you, see page 18 electrical problem.  Have you solved yours yet?  We have not, still looking for some clues.

John,

I'm no expert here, but have you checked the fuel cut off module/solenoid thingy - if your 300D has one.  On my C250 its a vacuum controlled cut off module mounted on the injection pump (according to Haynes).

E300D CUTTING OUT

My guess is that there is an air leak at the clear fuel lines near the filter.  Run the car and watch for bubbles.  Alternatively coat all the joints with grease to seal them, if this effects a cure then remove the grease on each joint in turn until the culprit is found.
Alternatively the fuel stop solenoid could be sticking but this would normally cause a non-start symptom.  Another possibility is the pickup screen in the tank, or the fuel filter, is blocked.  Try some additive to kill the bacteria.
Two more thoughts:
1. the wiring harness or connectors have corrosion or breaks. (you mention it being worse in the wet). Try the wiggle test.
2.  The trottle potentiometer is worn out at certain positions, but this should bring on the a mlfunction light as it has a feedback circuit.

E300D CUTTING OUT

Thanks everybody, sorry for the late reply i've been away. I took the car to Andy Gales as i had heard good reports, he told me it has the alarm relay so £400 later and a lot of messing around as they got the wrong one then it had the wrong program in it etc, you know how it goes. Anyway 200 miles later it nearly got me killed on the a1 after i overtook a lorry and it cut out again, i rang Andy Gales  and talked to Stuart but there was a complete lack of interest so i got rid of the heap.
I love mercs but after 95 the quality has got so bad you would be better off buying a Ford. One quick point on 96 + E300 the front subframes ROT , the boot lids ROT
and it goes on, if you have one give it a good look over
befor it gets to bad.
I have a 1983 240 deisel auto i will keep its in better condition, but now i drive a Passat, its galv.. so it wont rust. And it only stops when i want it to.
But thanks for the suggestions.

E300D 1995 stalling

I have a 95 E300D, and made the mistake of slightly overfilling the engine with oil. It stalled terribly until I finally figured out the problem!

I've got a 92 300D and had a problem with it cutting out when I had cause to accelerate hard. The first time it actually chucked it we were en route to Aberdeen with the car jammed full of luggage to catch a flight to the Costa Del Sol....that frayed the nerves a bit. Managed to establish that it was some sort of fuel starvation problem but still didn't know the root cause. It turned out that there was a second fuel filter somewhere in the engine (I have to confess to knowing absolutely nothing about car maintenance) and it hadn't been changed for a few years and had got really clogged up. Hats off to my local independent garage for curing it and it has been fine ever since.

ke injection

Hi

this is a post for karen sorry its not relevant to the diesel problem. Cutting out on the KE injection system was usually due to the over voltage protection relay mounted on the bulkhead behind the battery its worth changing any way I think they cost about 50 quid
