Hi to everybody new to board, have just put a deposit down on a e300 td elegance 1998 ,with 41000k on the clock full history with no rust issues that i could see, (was hard to find)looks a very good example. after reading some members views on rust issues i wonder if i have made the right choice ? any comments would be most welcome i am very confident that this is a great engine, just concerned about body in future years.

Welcome to the board and the badge mate!

Whilst I am a big fan of the engine I have seen many horribly rusty w210s, but of course they don't all go that way.

I think one of the places that's easy to miss is around the tops of the doors, under the rubber.
Have a REALLY good look over it, maybe even take it to a bodyshop and have them inspect it, if you or they find anything get the selling agent to put it right (or knock money off).

Not sure where you stand on the 'anti-corrosion' warranty, I think it was introduced in oct 1998.

There are many w210 owners on here who know far more than me, give me a w124 any day! :)

you wont go far wrong besides wings start at around 80.00 so no real damage there, front cross member can be an issue but if fmbsh will be covered under warranty but get it inspected straight away 8 years on w210 that age is the unofficial guide I was told my merc however after that there can still be a godwill where merc pay half but 9 times cheaper to get private

The main issue is the spring perches. They're the cups of metal that hold the tops of the front suspension springs in place, they're spot welded to the chassis, and they can rust away from the chassis. The welds are covered with black mastic so its hard to see (the water gets down the back of the mastic).

Only way to tell is to cut the mastic away and check, then repairing/resealing as necessary.
