Hi Everybody, I am new to this forum and new to MB, I have just bought a 60000mile one owner 1999 E300td to replace my company car, and I have to say its like new with a full MB service history, I didn't think 10 year old cars could be this good. I have to say it is a better car than my 54 plate Avensis than it replaced.
Anyway my question, can anyone give me an idea of a realistic MPG figure for this car? I will mainly be using it for long motorway type journeys.

thanks.

Hi,

I had the same car.....on the long run on motorways I was easily getting 35 - 40 mpg if not more.

I have one of these for eight years - great buy with a couple of exceptions. Keep an eye on your front wings as they are prone to rusting (late 90's Mercedes cock-up on the paint buying front apparently).

Last long motorway journey that I worked it out I got about 37 mpg - cruising at around 85 when conditions allowed).

Maintenance bills : I had to spend around 800 quid at 75000 miles (brake pipes, other wear & tear) and then a new ASR control unit at 120000 miles (£800). Additionally I had to fork out £300 this year to get seized wheel nuts removed on the front wheels (make sure you keep an eye on these - it's a design flaw).

Good car otherwise - enjoy it. You won't regret it.

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
35-40 is about right, be warned though that it will drop significantly once you're past 80mph.

At 60,000 can I recommend you enquire if the gearbox oil has been changed, if it hasn't then its about time its done. Not a major job, couple of hundred quid at a Merc specialist.

Spot on, I would say 35 to 40mpg is what I get with my E300td, not bad when you think of the weight and performance of the car!

Best I have mamaged is 470 miles to 55 litres usually get 7 to 8 miles per litre depending on weather and speed.

But they are beautiful to drive, glad you are enjoying the car

I agree with everyone else on mileage, fuel costs were softened in warmer weather by using 50 / 50 new veg oil (once ambient temp reached 10+). Very relaxing car to drive but was gutted when I found serious corrosion in the front subframe, please check yours asap, doors and boot lid also started to rust, but were inconsequential when compared to the subframe.
