Hi There, I have had my 1997 E300TD aventgarde automatic with 120000 miles a few weeks now and I'm still suffering power loss. I have fitted a new exhaust including cat and I fitted a maf today with no improvment. I cant find any split pipes or hear any hissing noises. It there all the time but really shows the problem when I hook on the caravan, It's not too bad until I hit a hill and it just dies and I have to change down manually but this does not help a lot and the engine gets hot. I dont know what else to try as this is getting expensive. Can anyone help.
Thanks Stan.

Is the intercooler full of oil?

Sounds like no turbo boost. IS the wastegate moving?

Or the pipe may have blown off, or the intercooler may have such a bog hole that it wont hiss or wistle. Look for telltale signs of black soot on the sump guard.

Hi There, Thanks for that, Can you tell me how to check if the intercooler is full of oil as there is no signs of soot anywhere. Also what do I need to strip to get at the intercooler.I take it that its behind the front bumper.
Stan.

Hi,
Have you changed the fuel and air filters?
I would be doing that before replacing anything else.

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
When you floor it, the turbo should be obvious - you should hear it hissing, quite easily, with the windows up.

Two ideas maybe?....

Is it poor power throughout the rev range, or more like when its changing through the gears...might be worth checking things like the kickdown relay? (relay marked on top saying 'kickdown' behind the panel behind the battery on the older cars, don't know if the same location on the newer cars)

Is it running on real diesel, biofuel...or still straight vegetable oil? (sounds daft I know but just thinking as you've only had it a few weeks, so previuos owners fuel could still be present in the tank)
I've dabbled with biofuels in other cars in the past...wouldn't go there again as in my experiences it affected both the power and rev range (so the auto box wasnt changing up or down as it should)....
Maybe a cheap option (well not that fuel is cheap, but you'll hopefully use it anyway), would be to brim the tank with fresh high cetane diesel (like diesel plus/max/vpower/ whatever they call it at the pumps)

two of my silly ideas thrown into the pot.....

good luck

Just thought of another idea...

What are your brakes doing? ie, maybe the parking brake shoes are binding slightly? (do the rear wheels feel hot after a run?)

(I'm trying to think of things to check that don't involve spending wads of money)

He could also add Joe some Millers 4 additive that increases the octane level a touch
