First (maybe last) post. Hello all. Last week I bought a 97 e300td 92k from a dealer. When started from cold there is a loud rattle/banging sound, which lasts for 10 to 30 seconds depending on how cold it is. Have been advised that could be a glowplug, but more likely an injector fault.

Took it back to the dealer who had the vehicle for two days, I telephoned today to see how car was. The dealer said the engine was ok, and that the noise could be expected for a car of that age and mileage. After a heated discussion the dealer said he would get the vehicle inspected by another mechanic.

I have a 30 day major parts warranty with the vehicle, Three main questions, would this rattle develop into any further damage to the engine, also would this be classed as a “major part”. Any idea where I stand leaglly, hasn't got to the stage where legal advise is needed, but fore warned etc.

Any help would be gratefully received. Wish i had found this forum before buying car. Thanks

A loud bang on start up is certainly not normal! An E300td with 92k on the clock is barely run in. My E300td has a very, very slight pre ignition type of ticking noise until it warms up, then it is very quiet. It does make a bit more of a rattle if started from cold without letting the glowplugs warm up, maybe you have one or two glowplugs failed. You should get them checked before your warranty expires because they are very tricky to replace, it is quite common for them to shear off in the cylinder head resulting in a major repair bill!

Could it be the timing chain ?

You could be right there David, with the bonnet up and a cold start one could hear if it is, as the rattle will be at the front
