Hi there,
Having problems with my e300td w210 99 saloon rhd cutting out and now not starting, first problem accured yesterday morning driving to work 5 miles into my 6 mile trip the car cut out as i slowed to a roundabout up until that point car drove perfectly, immediatley tried restarting with no luck after about 5 mins trying finally splutterd back to life and after a few seconds idled normally and ran fine again for the last mile of journey, i've only had car a few weeks and am running on veg oil reluctant to mention this as i don't think this has anything to do with my problem but because of this i did on the off chance of having a blockage problem replace the main filter and checked the prefilter but that was perfectly clean, after doing this work took forever to get the car started from what i understand the car self primes but seemed to take an excessive amount of cranking, set off home at end of the day car cut out 3 times twice on highway at constant speed started rough after about 5 mins both times and the 3rd time was as i swung into my drive, i didnt try and start it again at that point, checked my k40 relay found no problems, came to try to start it this morning wouldnt have it at all and finally flattened my battery, battery on charge now but has anyone got any other ideas on possible causes when i get battery back on will get my father round as i want to listen for the click of the shut off valve when cranking i believe this to be the best way to check if it is working? also have heard people talk about the crank position sensor, is there one on a diesel? also is there a lift pump on my model? have heard some people say yes and some say there isn't, if so whats best way to check that its ok?
thanks for any help if i had any would be pulling my hair out now.

Sounds like a lack of fuel.

Is the veg oil neat as it could be gelling and blocking the fuel lines. If not, there could be a leak. Most likely place is the pre-filter 0-ring which is in a small housing next to the fuel filter.

problem solved after hours of wasting time looking for an electrical problem it turned out to be dragging air into the lines, cause embarrasingly just low on fuel, odd though gauge was showing about an 1/8th of a tank and have had no problems before when it has been down to about zero, anyway tanked it up with veg and running perfect again now, thanks for all your help.
