E320 ´94. Climate control burned out

Hi everybody.
New to the forum. It took me a couple of days to read the related posts, which were very helpful.

Driving my E320 ´94 on the highway with AC, suddenly plastic odor and smoke appear from the push buttons of the climate control.

I manage to disarm the complete climate control unit, and found the green plate burned.

I will be able to replace the control unit, but wonder the cause of the failure.

Does anybody have an insight?

Thats almost an impossible question with electronics, some things self destruct, other times other things cause it.

A fault on the fan could cause it, do take car when you plug the replacement in and turn on, just in case

Yessss!!! That´s why I posted the question. I didn´t want Malcolm posting a message such as the one to the engine washers members !!!

I will be wearing a helmet, just in case.

I cant remember on these units if there is one or two connectors. If two plug in the output after you have tested, and have the fan turned off
