Hi folks, I had a 230TE (1986) Estate for 15yrs - maintained it myself, never had any problem that could not be solved with 60+ years of motorcycle and car maintenance experience... However, decided we should change it for a modern version, E200 Elegance Estate (1997) 3yrs ago (both in our late 70's, thought that it would last for the rest of our motoring years...
Bought it on Ebay, Biggest mistake of my life! We are still suffering from the horrendous expenses incurred - primarily due to hidden internal corrosion caused by a trade undersized battery being fitted two years previously. The battery enclosed under the rear passenger seat had not had the vent pipe reinstalled. the resultant gas build up had attacked much of the internal metalwork inside the rear doors, inside the seats and headrests, inside the rear seat belt locking mechanisms... etc. etc.
My Son, Ian, unexpectedly turned up on my 78th birthday in April, gave me a small package - enclosed was a Merc keyring with KEY attached !
The key was for an E320 Elegance Estate, (1999 T reg) complete with full Mercedes service history... [ 122,000 miles ] MOT due in July.
Ian is a Partner in Chartered Accountants and his Co-Partner had just taken delivery of his new Mercedes CDI Elegance - my Son had suggested that it would have a good home with me !!
The car had several minor (?) problems which I've sorted out - several other problems have got me puzzled.
Primarily, two or three times in the past weeks, I've noticed that the car will not stop and hold at a standstill on steep hills, urgent application of the footbrake was necessary (quite frightening at first !!)
Also, sometimes when backing into my parking space, the reverse mode does not appear to move the car until the revs build up to 1200 / 1500 rpm.
I'm assuming it could possibly be a lack of oil in the autotransmission system.
A further problem (?) when I drive out of my underground carpark, the car seems to shake sideways - nothing violent, but I can feel it through the back of the seat. Occasionally, notice the same effect when driving on smooth roads at low speeds.
I would appreciate any helpful comments.
Thank you,
R de N (James)
