e320 cdi 2001 - knocking and lots of black smoke

Well, the occaisional knock has developed into a full time knock. Yesterday it lost all power and I ended up check this site to see why - it was the MAF and EGR sensors which needed looking into.

£120 later and they have been fitted (by me). But i still can NOT drive the car because of the black smoke and the knocking noise.

Any ideas? Any one? I have been told it could be an injector, or "something really big" but nothing has shown up on the diagnostic machine...

Please help...

Hi,
Just posted about these circa 2000 injectors on another thread. This is becoming a regular problem on the forum. It would appear the earlier Bosch CDi injectors are prone to nozzle wear. I think the only way you can check the problem out is to have the injectors removed and the spray pattern checked as I did.

Don't mean to hijack thread but may be related....My 2001 320 CDi does smoke when you plant your foot hard and is particularly noticeable at night when a car is following (no knocks thankfully). Is this normal? I used to have a BMW 535d and it didn't smoke at all even after 100k.....

The merc shouldnt smoke either..tho at night with following lights it can seem much worse, worth getting someone to drive it at night and follow just to see how bad the smoke is..first port of call is the air filter, and then some injector cleaner just to rule out the maintenance problems.. whats the fuel consumption like?

Thanks, the engine sounds unhealthy, however, I put some injector cleaner in it and drove it about 80 miles without any problems in terms of power, but it gave out so much smoke I thought I would be stopped. At lower revs it knocked and the engine was shaking. I will try and film it tomorrow.

Any garage you would recommend for the whole removal, test, replace job, in the Rugby, or London areas?

Oh, and one other thing - prior to this it never smoked unless it went into kick down, and only then a puff of black.

Maybe should have started a new thread but too late now. Overall average for my car is 33 with mixed driving. I can get up to 38 (driving carefully) on a long run and get 30ish on short runs.... My car smokes a bit on start up after being left overnight and on kick down or foot to flooor on motorway.
