Last week the BAS warning light came up on my 2000 E320cdi estate just a couple of miles before I reached home after a 160 mile trip. It was quickly joined by the ABS light, the ESP light and the SRS light. I pulled up to try the lock to lock cure , but that didnt work, so I switched the engine off to see if that reset the lights. Big mistake! The car wouldnt restart at all so I had a nice walk home. Went back in the girlfriends car to jump start it, and lo and behold my car started so I drove it home with no problem. Following morning, started to drive to work (lights and heater fan on), and the Xmas tree dashboard lit up again. Turned round and went back home and the car died completely just as I got home. I charged the battery and the car ran fine the following day, during the day, but failed again, handily when my girlfriend was out in the car in the evening. RAC man came out and said there was no output from the alternator. I see the alternators are stupid money but can get a remanufactured unit for about £200. Is it a DIY job to change the alternator, or do I need to book the car in to my local Indie to sort out? Naturally I could do with saving as much dosh as I can at this time of year else there will be no Xmas pressies for the gf and kids.
