You can have one or the other, if you want more power buy an AMG and forget about the Diesel if you want more economy forget about the 320CDI and buy a 200CDI or 220CDI. More power = more fuel

its a frequently banded around story that chipping can get you more economy and is vaguely true for manuals where you can drive like a grandad and use the torque to change up at 1100rpm (but you won't). On an auto, its a lie.
Also, tyhe ecu doesn't know the chip has ordered more fuel so will overestimate the mpg on the trip computer.

2005 C270CDi Avantgarde Estate. Bought 2005, sold 2022.
There's a widely used economy chip / remap for X5 diesels (which I presume are all autos).

Remapping?

I had my C320 CDi remapped by Superchips. The inital remap did not download correctly, and although the car went like 'a bat out of hell' it was far noiser than with the standard programme.

Superchips did a second remap, which performed much better but the fuel consumption at any given speed was heavier than before by about 10%. Superchips say that if you don't save money on fuel with turbo diesels they will give you your money back!!.

I thought long and hard about whether to keep the remap deciding to do so, as the car drove better. Superchips returned to my home on three occasions, and I tried the car with the standard programme and then the remapped file.

In the end I got myself confused whether the vehicle was chipped or unchipped so to speak..... so I went inside and had a brandy!!!.

Although I am now told I have the second superchip file, it seems to have lost the blistering torque increase and linear smoothness, and I would swear it's running it's standard programme. Time for another brandy perhaps.

Perhaps - but it can only do this by reducing the fueling - hence reducing power. Nothing for nothing in this life.

...
Except IT consultants apparently as we're all now working for free I discovered this morning. Anyone want an E270 - it seems I can't afford one anymore.

Please NOTE that This is NOT the case !!! If you use the extra power then you can only expect to use more fuel of course . But say you want a performance MAP if you dont use the performance you WILL gain MPG as we have proved performance MAPPED ECU (2.7 CDI) has produced +9 MPG while running the performance upgrade !!!!

That is what I said more power = more fuel. You say if you don't use the power you will use less fuel, so what your saying is put a performance chip/remap in it then don't use it as if you do you will use more fuel  You could always keep the map you have maintain warranty, not prematurely wear out your injectors and use the money not spent on the chip/remap to purchase fuel to use your current car to it's full power. Still each to their own.

I could see how a mapped car, driven with early changes to take advantage of the extra torque could show an improvement due to lower revs, but on an auto which will refuse to change that early and given normal conditions I can't see how this could be so. The trip computer may well show that level of improvement as it will under estimate the amount of fuel used (its figures will remain based on the standard set up) but on a brim to brim check, in real world conditions, on an auto merc, I'd be very impressed if you could show a real mpg improvement.
Still the power improvements are worth having!

If you choose not to use the Extra Power you will gain more MPG and if you do use the power its optimum power as opposed to a standard output.
so rely it's a no brain'er

car gets Re-mapped = more BHP / NM - (Based on fast road MAP)
= more MPG (when driven normal)

its always nice to have real experts on here. Most of us are amateurs so a little fact can be very useful.

You can map the ecu for economy, power or an inbetween of both! If it's the ECU that is remapped then the MPG on the trip computer will be true (it's when you install a chip box that alters the instructions from the ECU that you don't get a true MPG reading!).

I recently had my E280 cdi Sport remapped for economy and have seen significant gains! This morning I set off from home in the pennines near Sheffield (cold start), meandered 10 miles or so to the motorway, before heading down to Derby and crawled through the city centre to my destination. Same journey on the way back for a round trip of 110 miles. I was especially pleased when I pulled back up at home to see my trip reading 48.4 mpg! (especially considering all the hills we have up here).

I can vouch that the auto box does change earlier. On my E class sport auto, I have the 7 G tronic box with manual mode and flappy paddle gear shift. Hence I can switch from auto to manual and see what gear i'm in. As a test, up a steep pennine hill, I steadily accelerated and at 40 mph was already in fifth gear! Also, as a tight yorkshireman, I always but always run the car til absolutely no miles left - petrol pump symbol flashing up on the dash. If the trip was underestimating fuel used, then I'm sure I would have had a few petrol can in hand walks to the garage!
