Over last 15K - Average 33.4. This includes wide range of journeys. On a run if keep tp 2000 RPM Max (73mph) get about 44mpg. On run at 80 - 90 mph returns around 38.

If you are pulling 27 to 30 mpg around town and averaging 35 on a longish run then you will be doing good...the onboard computer read out will hit 40+ but never in reality.. GordonR ,s post would be kinda near the mark...

Dont understand you said 27-30 in town and 35 on motorway while the othe 2 said 35 in town and 40 on motorway.why are figures so different?
on my w293 270 i get 30-33 in town and 40 on motorway but others qoute 45 overall which i will find inpossiable unless i drive at 60ish on motorway all day

I tend to fare better than most (W 211 for 3 years then W 220 for 3 years, both 320 CDIs).

I average around 39 overall, and can get 44 (brim to brim) on long journeys.

This is done by:
avoiding congestion - don't drive at peak periods
long rather than short journeys - engine warm for most of the time
cruising at an indicated 80 mph (just over 2,000 rpm).

I appreciate not everyone can follow these guidelines, but you would be surprised how much quicker your journeys will be if you avoid "rush hour".

On my way to work, starting 10 minutes later took half an hour longer. I tended to get to work early for that reason, and had done all the voicemail, e-mail and snail mail before the others arrived, which left me the whole day to do the rest of the job.

Simples, tch!

My X plate 320CDi figures tally exactly with GordonR

Ave 33mpg

I have seen 44 on the (not so accurate) computer but this was A roads at ave speeds of 40mph. I think the computer estimates 10% high. I must try brim to brim sometime.

However, for a large powerful car, circa 30mpg is excellent and I am very pleased with performance and consumption.

Hope this helps!

I have queried this with practically every merc driver i speak to, the 3/34 mpg overall is fairly standard, some will say better, but nearly all will agree that the dash read out figures arent reliable and in general tend to be generous regarding the actual figures

i will do a tank to tank to see what its realy doing. i have been doing mostly short runs 10's and 20 mile trips. and was showing low 30's on the dash. since doing that 100+ trip and back doing my usual 10's and 20's the dash is now showing high 30's, i wonder if that long blast has cleared something allowing better economy

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
If it can't improve on my E300TD, which will do 40mpg at 70 on the motorway, it can't be much cop :)
