E320 CDI Rain Sensing Wipers

I have a 2004 E320 CDI. Of late I am noticing that the rain sensing wipers are having a greater delay time before the wipers start working. That is that more water falls on the wind screen before they wipe. Today however, they just didn't work. I had to switch to manual wipe before I crashed my car. From a light sprinkle to a heavy downpour they just didn't budge.
I never leave them on, I always switch them on when it starts to rain and when I do that it gives a single wipe as it always has done.
I have cleaned the windscreen and even the sensor area, which I believe is where the rearview mirror is mounted but to no avail.
Any suggestions? No error codes showing up.

It will have to go onto STAR to see what has gone wrong, it possible that a sensor has failed in the unit, the one sweep shows that they are activated, so not a SAM fault

I use "Prestige Servicing" in Stockton (Preston Park area) about 15 miles from Durham, they are open on Saturday morning for odds and sods and they have the STAR diagnostic facility.
They have recently moved premises and I don't have the new address but you can give them a call on 01642 669100

I use Prestige and think they are very good. My car had a B service and new springs there two weeks ago on a Saturday morning - not sure thats odds and sods.
