Hope someone can help - I'm new to a Mercedes and have a light on the underside of my auto dimming rear view mirror - does anyone know what this is for?

Its the reading light - switches on/off via the switch in the overhead console.

It's just there to provide very gentle illumination of the centre console at night

Yes - great isn't it!
You hardly notice it's there until you realise that you can still see inside the car and there are no road lights around. First saw this on a friends 5 series and was chuffed to find one on my last E.
You can't turn it off but then why would you want to!

...and you should have them in the footwells, and the door handle recessess as well. My last car was an Audi A3 which had this sort of thing, but in red. I have to say I find the MB yellow / green variety much better!

There are similar lights in the door handle recesses, rear view mirror, footwells and under the rear of the front seats for rear seat passengers to see.
