E320 engine noise ...

Hi there,

I am businly settling into my new (to me - it was new in 1999) E320 estate, and loving it. But I am slightly worried about a noise the engine makes on hard acceleration (which is something I am doing a little too much of!). On top of the noise of the engine there appears to be a gentle vibration - perhaps like sand being rattled in a can. Now the performance is great - I'm just worried that the noise might pressage something expensive, and I'd like to get it looked at if necessary whilst it's under warranty. Alternatively, I'm just getting used a nice smooth powerful V6, after a harsh, throaty v4 Saab 2.0 turbo...

Can you set my mind at ease?

Stick with the search but in the meantime I would make the concern know to the seller if there is a warranty. There was an issue with some V6 petrol engine harmonic balancer shafts disintegrating and effectively demolisdhing the engine but i am not sure what ones this applies to.

A rattly sound could be fule/pinking which would point to an engine management fault somewhere, possibly a sensor. Ekkp looking here, everyone is very helpful.

While you are at it check out the:

air con
rust, peel back the door rubbers all the way round and check for rusting doors.

There is a possibility one of the catalytic convertors is disintegrating. I should check it out, replacements are very expensive.
