W211 E320 Estate 2005
I am going to view a Mercedes E320 CDI estate soon. It has covered 176000 miles and the seller says that it is in superb condition. Any thoughts about what I should be looking for please?
Any help and advice gratefully received.
TIA

That'll be a 210...like mine. Engine and gear box great.

Body work rust, rust, rust:

Front wings, rear arches, doors, tail gate, behind rear bumper at sides.

Almost every one I have seen has some form of rust. In mine, apart from the usual places, the metal under the spare wheel had all but disintegrated!
However, if you can get one that has been fixed you'll have a fabulous car with lots of toys too. Mine was the straight 6 diesel 3.2 and pulled like a train with near sports car performance. Driven sensibly (not too often!) it would return in the low 40's MPG. Drive it like a Doris and even higher figures are possible. :D

Mine is a 2002 W210 E320CDI Avantgarde Estate Select, I do have slight rust bubbles above front wheel arch which is being fixed next week, apart from that its a great car, great load carrying capacity and a good comfortable family car, mine is a seven seater.
Goes well as expected from a 3.2, and good fuel economy, I can get 45-50 mpg on a decent journey.
Hope this helps

Great engine & transmission, goes like stink :D. Rusts as badly as anything I've encountered .

Also look at the dash display (temp, clock, etc). They can pixilate badly and it's not cheap to put right properly.

Get the transmission checked.

At 170k it's probably fine (or it broke and was repaired) MB removed the need to replace the ATF (automatic transmission fluid).. but should not have.. add ATF replacement at 50k intervals, if it appears fine but there's no history of changes get then get the ATF changed pronto.

If having bought it, the transmission lets you down, at worst is should be a ~£1000 rebuild, NOT a £4000 replacement (MB quote)

Next up, look for 'black death' (injector problems).. enough has been written about this, best to look it up.

Everything else is basically rust, or replacable without costing a bomb (suspension drop links etc)

Instrument cluster pixelation issue will bite sooner or later.. I've had a go at fixing mine, only partially successful, have learnt to live with it.. I leart to know which gear I'm in, and I have a watch!

This all sounds woeful..

But mine has been utterly reliable for the last 100kmiles.. they are great cars if looked after.

Mercedes 210's don't have a rust problem, MB UK told me that so it must be true !

Thanks for the info guys. I will ask the relevant questions before spending time and money traveling to view. I have seen one with the pixelated displays, looked crap but probably a thing that one could get used to or maybe obtain replacements from a breakers?
Great info so far, many thanks

I have noticed that the headlights on many of these E Class Merc's seem to be opaque instead of clear. Is this really common? Does it affect the light transmission and does it affect the MOT?
TIA

They are plastic covers over the lamps with some form of lacquer over them that goes "misty" after a while. There are various ways of cleaning the misty coating off on, as seen on You Tube.
The pixel problem can be fixed professionally for around £90, or a used unit from a breaker at around £100 (but it will eventually do the same thing)

Having owned a couple of 210's I can say the I.6 320CDI is a fantastic engine. There are some that have covered 400,000 miles and a few that have cantered past the 500k mark.

If the air-con doesn't blow ice-cold then make sure it does before parting with your cash. It can be as simple as a re-gas (but at around £45 why hasn't that been done?) or the dreaded evaporator which means dismantling the whole dash. A 12 hour job for even the most skilled MB technician.

Also, take your time and make sure EVERYTHING works.

My old 210 Estate is for sale in Slough. I spent a small fortune on it (6, new injectors, 6, new glow plugs, MAF, EGR, FULL MB Exhaust, replaced PSE Pump, Refurbed Diamond-Cut Sador Wheels, New Genuine MB Windscreen, New speedo binacle, new shocks, and under warranty 2, new wings and 1, new tailgate from MB.

The Evapoator, heater matrix and duo valve were all replaced around 12, months ago.

It's probably one of the least rusty 210's around.

Send a PM if you would like to view it. :)

This one is a beaut and the last two owners are known to me and aree meticulous in their care of their cars.

Its one not to be missed.

Thanks for that, I cannot see the pictures because I am not a member of that forum :(
I would love to buy that unfortunately I need to sell my wife's Jeep first and raise the money and it is a tad over my budget in truth.
Thanks for the link anyway.
