Hi all,

Last week saw the second Mercedes buy for me, a 2001 E-class wagon, 320CDI lump type. Burgundy paint with virtually no outside rust (I'm too scared to look behind the outside of it, but it seems clean!). Had one before that I shared as a reliable daily with a friend as we both had silly other cars. . . . That one unfortunately became a non-runner due to a side on collision whilst it was parked up and the other party not stopping. Then i decided that trading my silly car for one was the only way i could possibly go. The sheer luxury and power is matched to nothing else out there for the money.

Now this is where I split the room, I'm of a modifying upbringing - The silly cars I speak of were an MX5 Mk1 drift toy for myself and my buddy has a pristine show-spec MK2 golf with a 2.8 litre supercharged VR6 lump in it. I won't lie to you all, there's something pornographic about an E-class estate cleaned up, dropped and put on some nice and subtle 19's. So this is where this thread is going to go . . . . Don't judge me for it, I'm not one of the youths that drink 'cider' in a park, and if I happen to I'd damned well clean up after myself.

Back to the car. . . . Its started a little bit of an annoying bug with it, after 10mins or so of faultless boosting (with no black smoke) it goes into what I'll assume is limp mode and won't rev over 3k.... I thought it might be the MAF so I swapped that out, ran absolutely fine for 3 hours then it sometimes creeps back in. What I have found is it can be solved by turning the car off and back on again. Anyone got any ideas? I'll swap the ECU out tomorrow and see what that does but I can't think of much else beyond that. If it wasn't for being solved by switching off and back on i'd be going down the route of water temp sensors etc, but surely they wouldn't be tricked by just a simple switch-off?

Also, going to be ordering some H&R springs in the next week or so, read about the SLS system which I'm fine with re-adjusting but any fine tuning advice would be appreciated.

Just as a final offering really (seeing as I just managed to get 4 tickets for the goodwood rolling car show for free from a very helpful thread on here!), as I say we have the previous e320 sitting about doing nothing (hence why i can swap random parts in and out in a curing mission!), but if anyone in the south-east london/kent regions needs anything from it then please do give me a shout. I'm more than happy to help out however I can.

Not going to lie about it, I'm a little nervous about signing up - I'm not really in my comfort zone here, however from what I've seen of a few of your meet threads I'm more than in my comfort zone coming along to a pub, drinking some proper ales and having a good chat about cars, even if mine isn't to everyones tastes.

Thanks for taking the time to read that, I'm Alex. :)

Oh and by the way.....there is absolutely no mystery behind lowering these as regards the SLS. Get under the back and disconnect the small link bar between the rear anti-rollbar and the valve (its up near the diff on the drivers side).Simply fit your lowering springs front and rear as normal then with the weight of the car on its wheels, i.e. on a lift or on ramps go to reconnect the link bar. You will now find you need to adjust its length to get it fit back as it was. Do that and youre done. You will have a lowered S210 with the SLS functioning as before, the only difference is it will self level back to its new lowered ride height.

What's the tyre wear like after you have lowered it?

Tyre wear is inevitably accelerated somewhat but this can be minimised with checking that all of the rear control arms have bushes that are not worn. Abnormal rear tyre wear can be all but eliminated by fitting adjustable rear camber arms but as we have seen no one in the U.K. is interested in buying & fitting them even when a set is designed, manufactured and offered in the U.K. at a price cheaper than anywhere else worldwide!!

E320cdi AVANTGARDE SELECT
Hi Alex
I have an unmodified 2002 w210 e320cdi 7 Seater Avantgarde Estate which goes like a rocket as well as being a good load carrier for my business goods and for the Kids.
It also returns between 45-50 mpg on a decent run so all in all a good car for all purposes.
When I first bought it I had a similar problem to yours of going into Limp Mode but with the usual good advice from Cole at MBS he recommended getting a new Battery which was the correct specification for the e320cdi with Air Con.
Bought new Bosch battery from ECP, never had problem since.
My Chrome Grille has a few small bubbles and if you have a suitable one in good condition that will fit my 2002 E320 cdi Estate I would be interested in it.
Either PM me on here or leave an answer by reply please
Thanks Alex and welcome to the Forum
BAZZER1:)

Thought its about time to stick a photo up of the beast. Nothing much to look at at the moment, so its a pretty generic cleaning shot, but still.

Sorry matey, my avantgarde grille has gone straight onto my one, got an elegance one though!

Ordered some H&R lowering springs from Larkspeed a couple days ago, should be here within a fortnight. . . Until that point, its making the very hard decision between:

The just-released 3DSM 0.06's 18x8.5 fronts and 18x9.5 rears.

ORRR

The just-released Rotiform IND casts . . . 19x8.5 fronts and 19x10 rears

I'm having a bit of a mare deciding. Views?
