E320CDi Estate 2002 Tailgate Assist problem

Can anyone advise, please. Suddenly and without warning the tailgate on my Merc hit me on the head! on investigation I discovered that the assist was not working - I checked fuses under the rear seat - all seemed in order - has anyone else had this problem - and perhaps suggest possible cause

the motor assist is only for locking, the spring gas strut will have failed. the info that Andy K put up is not dissimilar for dismantling in the other thread.

If anyone is interested I have spoken with Merc and the gas struts are £30+ each - usually need to change them as a pair since when 1 goes the other overworks - anyway, EuroCarParts can do them on special order at £9.95 each!

I had the same problem on my E270 estate ,i had to have the struts replaced .I asked on this forum if any body had done the job them selves ,I go 1 reply ,he said it was hard work .I though about it but then if i was to damage the body work the money i would have saved on body work i would of saved nothing .I let MB garage do the work ,there coment i got back was they were glad they did not have to do that job each day .
