Mrs D and myself have owned well over 80 cars between us since our teenage years. Many have been very interesting and very varied makes. However looking back at them all probably the best overall was a 2002 BMW 5-series estate with the 3l straight 6 diesel. Built like a tank, like a living room inside with the leather and walnut look, so roomy for folks and in the load area but most of all that 6cyl diesel was sublime.

I had a ‘97 e39 520i saloon with the 2l straight six which was upgraded by my local BMW dealer to a 3l with 240bhp on dyno. Beautiful car with beige leather and engine was awesome to listen and drive! Bought it brand new and kept it for 10 years which then sold with 270k kms on the clock.

The other day I did slop some high temp caliper paint on the hubs and brake calipers after a quick rub down and brush . Big improvement for the few quid it cost . I will add another coat next time I take the wheels off for any other reason .

No they are 50 year anniversary BMW ones . You can buy them for the bonnet and boot as well if you so choose . EBay £8

Been tinkering around taking some measurements, I’m trying to figure out if I can build a wooden platform to sit the wheel ramps on in order to get extra space underneath to do a gearbox service .
Also thinking if I can make some small ones for the rear or utilise some ramp extensions at the rear to raise the back at the same time . The idea would be to slide the rear ramps in front of the rear wheels at the point the front wheels roll on to the start of the ramps .
My drive is at an angle that sort of makes the car level at the point where the front of the car is on ramps , but extra space underneath would really help on the odd occasion .
It’s all very Apollo 13 using only wood I’ve got stashed around , what could go wrong eh

Would it not be safer to build some cribs and jack the car onto them? lower cribs on the high side so the car is level..

That set up just does not look safe Wighty! cant you get the car in the garage level and put it up on four axle stands?

That’s just to take measurements . Don’t worry I’m a decent carpenter and have the benefit of having been trained in Fire Brigade Urban search and rescue for collapsed buildings . Whatever kills me it won’t be this job

Possibly but I’m looking at getting the car higher than wheel ramps , which is quite a high lift . Plan B might be to do it on level ground , either on a flat neighbours drive or in the road (it’s quiet ) . That would put it on wheel ramps and axle stands .
I do prefer working on my drive though just in case a problem stops play .
I have done 5 or 6 MB gearbox service on my drive with the same set up but without the extra space I’m just looking for slightly more space .
I am sure the prefect solution will present itself .
No, I’m not paying someone to do it

I think if I’d seen something that good years ago I would have bought it . But I’m at the wrong end of my time doing undercar work .
Looks a cracking bit of kit though .

Gave the wheel nuts 2 coats of spray silver . Looks much better now .
