hi
took sump cover of and found a lever no. 20 in diagram which has become detached from setting motor no. 11 in diagram and from a rod on the underside of the inlet manifold, which i think controls flaps in the manifold.
the car is a 2000 w210 e320cdi which has been emitting black smoke when under pressure and also going into limp mode occasionally over a period of about 3 months,i replaced the maf which didn't make any difference.
anyone got any constructive ideas

It is the inlet port mechanism that has become detached. Someone here may be able to suggest a repair, else it is a new manifold which is many £'s.

this is a common problem on your model. there is a new lever available which should cure your problems as long as the linkage moves ok and there are no other problems. we have changed a few but it's not an easy job.

generally this manifold and flap system does not suffer the same issues as the ml270 cdi, so i am not too concerned. the link that has come off has a poor design of ball joint that wears and falls off, the new part may have been re-designed.

would i get a new lever from mb dealer? any pointers on the fitting of it, the linkage is free moving and i have it set to what i think is about 1/2 to 3/4 open, car is starting and driving ok at this setting a little smoke when pushing on and on kickdown, but what will it be like when the cold weather comes.

yes, get it from the dealer. you will need dextrous fingers and a certain aptitude for the job, or entrust a mechanic. from memory it is best fitted from underneath, i may be wrong. but get in there yourself and see how easily you can reach it!! you could pop the old one back on and secure with an elastic band for a temporary repair, i have even seen one with a spring codged on to hold the link up and stop the ball joint coming apart.
