Im pretty sure I have the common timing chain rattle on start up. It's very slight and only if left for at least 24 hrs.

Im hoping I can get away with just changing the tensioner. Is it a nightmare job?

E350 2010

I couldnt find anything on youtube

Many thanks for looking

Don’t quote me , but I didn’t think the 350 V6 diesel has a problem with timing chains ? What mileage do you have

Smart + others :)
Chains can wear on that engine, not as common as the 651 tho.

The om642 isn't known for issues with timing chains but can happen.
From a quick scout round the web the tensioner doesn't look easy to change but hopefully an indy can confirm.

That said if the chain is rattling chances are it'll need changing.

Sure it’s not lifters?
Im not to be honest mate. I changed the oil after a long overdue service and it improved masively. If its just the lifters Im worrying over nothing I suppose.

I'm afraid we do a fair amount of chains on these engines.
Normally we seem to do them on ML's.

the chains are usually quite slack when they are rattling and you won't get away with just tensioner. although it's always worth a go.

Where you based? Certainly worth getting one of the Indy’s to have a listen

OM642 chain DO stretch, and very common too. I have linked Finnish thread about issue many times, when tensioner indicates clearly when chain is stretched, pictures of old/new chain etc. Note that oil filler hole is not 'at right place' any more in newer engines.

Interesting , I wonder what mileage’s it can become an issue ?

Excessively regular oil changes will result in instant catastrophic failures :p:p:p
Er , no they won’t ! :D I’m actually going to knock out a quick oil change this morning :)

In that discussion they are saying there is no clear correlation to mileage, anything between 200k to 400k

What sort of cost is it to have a chain replaced on the 642 engine?
