Hi,

I'm looking at buying a new car tomorrow and have a quick question about the engine.

It's a E350cdi Coupe Sport Bluemotion with Start/Stop. Registered at the dealer in January 2013, but only has 44 miles on the clock.

I believe the engine is 265hp, 457 ft/lb. I have a colleague who had one of the early models (2009) with the same badge (350cdi).

Am I right in thinking this has about 230bhp so there has been an update to the 350cdi engine at some point?

Apart from the canteen bragging rights, to be honest his 2009 car absolutely flies (compared to my current 2010 C250 cgi). If this one has another 35hp then it should be a really great engine. And it's only 157 g CO2 - cheaper than my C Class to tax!

Thanks!

Your figures are correct and your car will be faster but whether there is significant real world difference I do not know.

I'd be more interested in the torque figure comparison.

Remember the old adage - "Horsepower sells cars, but torque wins races".

;)

That 35hp is not necessarily any use if it is peaky as a result. The old one, with nominally less power, might actually be quicker!

All I'm saying is that hp figures on their own, as a headline, are almost useless.

Old one seems to be 398 ft/lbs versus 457 for the new one.

Hopefully a win/win. Dealer has offered it to me for £30,500 and has the following options:

Met paint, full leather (the upgraded, not the "man made" standard), Adaptive Bi Xenons, COMAND, Memory Seats.

Apparently list was £46,500 but it's not the newest shape so I guess they are looking to clear stock.

Good deal or bad deal? Not bought a "last model" car before so not sure what sort of deal to expect.

That looks a considerable difference/improvement, although again if you can't see the curve you don't know if it's a narrow peak or a broad spread.

Either way, I'm sure it will be spanking - so good luck tomorrow and get on and enjoy it! I bet you can't wait! :D

I'm not up on new car deals/prices, but the most important thing is this - if you're happy with the car and the deal, then nothing else matters.

Thanks, I think I'm going to go for it. Balloon payment is due in December for my current C250 and this defers the inevitable for another 3 years (when no doubt I'll do the same!).

At least I feel I'm getting something for the extra money - I've really enjoyed my current car but fancy a change without going too mad.

The dealer has done alright seeing as he only tentatively called me today! Easiest sale he's had for a while!

I'm sure you'll love it.

Compared to your existing C250CGI

229ft/lbs to 457ft/lbs.
201bhp to 265bhp.

I went from a 204bhp S211 E Class to a 272bhp S211 E Class and the difference, in all road situations, is significant (albeit both diesels)

It will be a hoot!

Don't forget to post some photos.

620Nm wasn't a figure I'd seen before, so I checked the MB website and according to the technical data the 3.0L CDI 252hp/620Nm engine is a TWIN TURBO - if this is the case, then praise the lord.

A twin turbo V6 3.0L diesel at last.

Unfortunately the configurator has been known to be wrong on occasions, but I hope this time it's right.

Has anyone seen any more news about this engine?

The E-class coupe catalogue says the 4-cylinder diesels have twin turbo but is oddly silent about the V6 diesel in that regard! However, it does show the 265bhp/620Nm figure for the V6 both in a table and as a graph. The graph is interesting in that it shows the engine keeps above 500Nm from about 1300-4000rpm. This compares favorably with my current twin-turbo petrol engine which gives a similar figure from 1300-5000rpm.

On that basis, the drop from 366bhp to 265bhp may not be felt in everyday driving.

No V6 twin-turbo motors for MB in the UK.

Just a dodgy configurator then - shame really :(.

Mine, being an OM642, has the usual split second hesitation from standstill.

The twin turbo OM651 220/250's have instant response - I'd like to see a 3.0L t/t (smaller followed by bigger), as per the four pots.

Both Beemer and Audi have them now.

When I saw the 350 BlueTec spec on the MB website I thought there was a new unit with the facelift.

No its not. Bluemotion is a VAG thing, Blue Efficiency is Mercedes.

Hey Anthony,

Pardon me for a minor thread hijack OP, but would GAD be able to show pictures of the work? I'm particularly interested to see how the car looks post DPF hardware delete. Obviously as long as the owner is happy with this of course.

I'm currently waiting for a couple of things to be sorted / checked on my C350 before I commit to any mapping work. Oh, and collect a little more data re: MPG at stock.

Scoob.
