Has anyone any ideas what this problem is: when I use my electronic key to lock my E430 the doors lock and the indicator lights flash twice (as normal) but then they start flashing at double speed and continue doing so until I unlock again.

If I immediately use the key to lock them again everything seems OK ....... until I walk away and then the indicator lights start flashing at double speed again.

I then have to return to the car, unlock and lock the doors manually.

Thanks in advance for any ideas or help.

I had an identical thing and found that my boot wasnt shut properly.

All I can suggest is that you check all the doors and the boot to make sure everything is shut properly and then see if the sensors on the locks (if you have them) are working.

I suppose you should double check that the vacuum pump is actually locking everything correctly also as I guess this could cause the same symptoms.

I believe it means your alarm has been activated or cannot be set due to a problem.

Thanks Spike. I've checked the boot, the doors, the sensors and that the vacuum pump is actually locking everything so this doesn't seem to be it.

Thanks also dieselman. Following your lead I went through the process I described above (used electronic key to lock and when the indicator lights started flashing at double speed then immediately used the key to lock them again) then used the manual key to open the driver door.

This should activate the alarm but I heard no siren. So, it seems indeed that my alarm cannot be set "due to a problem".

Any ideas what that problem might be?

Thanks again

It could be the interior motion sensors. Try switching them off with the button on the dash before locking the car. Also try de-activating the anti jacking sensor to see if that is faulty.

Thanks, again, guys. Negative - no difference after reslamming the bonnet and disabling motion sensors and anti-jacking sensor.

In the meantime, though, I've noticed yet another weird symptom. If I try locking with the remote as above (giving double speed flashing indicators etc) and then unlock with remote to stop the flashing, ostensibly leaving car stable but unlocked, after 45 seconds or so the car locks itself automatically and ......... yes ...... the double speed flashing indicators start up again.

Thus, the only way to leave the car safely appears to be to lock it with the slide-out mechanical key element.

Probably a silly suggestion, but what happens if you leave a door open and try and set the alarm, is it the same as when you try and set it with everything shut?

You may be able to narrow down the fault this way. The closest I get to an E class is when I am picking my car up from it's service and even then the sales staff keep a close eye on me :) so I am probably talking rubbish...

:)

I'm so frustrated A Class that nothing is a silly suggestion. However, everything's the same if I leave a door open.

Do the interior lights stay on when you shut the door like they do when you have the courtesy setting on ? maybe one of the small black reed switches are nackered.

Also , i know its going to be hard to check , but , does the light stay on in the boot when you close it too ?

it sounds like the car is doing what its supposed to , but , just the alarm is not arming. Failing all this , take it to the dealer and see what they say

Thanks Jason. Interior lights go off OK and, by leaving the boot open and pressing the closing sensor, I was able to check that the boot light goes off.

So .......... I suppose it's the stealership but I had been hoping to avoid that - I'm still recovering from last month's £700 to cure a BAS warning light problem!

Tell me about it , I had the two laser type infra red sensors changed earlier in the year. Both cost £400 to be replaced :x

Best of luck , it was too easy for it to be a door closing switch. 8)
