Hi all,

I have just had to pay over £300 to get a gearbox sump gasket changed on my E500. It was spotted by Mecedes Lakeside during an MOT.

It seemed to me that on a 2004 car with 41,000 miles and a full MBSH, a gasket shouldn't fail unless it had been badly fitted in the first place, so I have written to MBUK to ask them for an eskulab goodwill payment.

I'll update this thread with what happens.

In the meantime has anybody else had a similar failure or this my problem an unusual one

Looks you've been ripped off. Gasket costs about £7, oil about £80 and labour no more than 1 hour.

Ripped off

Thanks for both your replies, I thought that the labour was a bit strong but had nothing to compare it with. I'm now even more annoyed.

I'll think about the Portland Bill meet but from Essex it's a bit of a run unless I can tie it in with a weekend break.

More often than not, these apparent rip offs actually include other work. Not sure what mind. The electrical plug seal comes to mind as that will need doing, but then I'm sure my dealer did it as a warranty recall when they changed the oil (and sump gasket). £200 from memory. But then that was done is a run down, poverty stricken area - MB Harrogate if memory serves!

Pete --not in anyway having a go at you over trying for a payment but the car is now 5 years old !!
I would be surprised if any car of that age is still guarranteed as part of a manufacture warranty--unless you have a special warranty cover -am I missing something?
The milage is low yes -but our 1995 Astra is now on 39,000 at 15 years old -it still drives as new but is a very old car none the less.

thats over the top, and it could just be the connector plug that was leaking?

Lot of cars still have warranty at 5 years. Mostly Japanese. But Japanese cars also tend not to need things like this and I would say a Japanese car dealer might handle it differently. My experience with MB would never encourage me to buy another new one. I still see poor customer service is high on their agenda.

Hi,

I know what you are saying but having been a member on the smartclub site for some years there is a history of MB paying out after warranty if the fault is likely to have been with the car from when it was made. This is what Eskulab claims are all about.

I can't see how an undisturbed gasket should start to leak if it had been fitted properly in the first place which is why I asked if this was a regular occurence or unusual

To be fair, gaskets do give way and can leak - on any car. They normally don't but it can happen.
MB are pretty good at goodwill contributions, even on 5 year old cars, I've had several discussions with the dealer where I've made it clear that the only way they'll get the job is if MB chip it, otherwise its going to the indie. Theyv'e normally got me a heafty contribution.

That said, at 5 years the oil and filters needed changing anyway and should have been done as part of the service schedule. (Why didn't Lakeside recommend it?) That would have included a new gasket so its all rather academic as it should have been changed, with or without a leak and so MB might not be willing to chip in....unless it WAS the electrical plug - they replaced mine FOC - in which case what the hell is Lakeside mucking around at - they should be trying to get you the contributionh, unless they know they've ripped you off and want to keep quiet.....

Just an update for those that remember this thread.

I finally got a reply from MBUK refusing to pay anything towards my gasket problem but they have got MB Lakeside involved who will be refunding 20% of the labour cost, which was the main item.

I still feel a bit hard done by after reading some of the replies about how long this should really have taken but at least it was worth writing the letter
