Hello everyone, I've been getting the typical juddering on acceleration that alot of people have experienced with the w211. I took it to my local independant merc specialist and they said it has got the old valeo radiator and that has caused the fluids to mix so I will need a new radiator, torque convertor and a new gearbox which would cost around 4k. Does that sound about right?

Cheers.

One of our cars starts juddering about every 60k miles and changing the gearbox oil and filter stops it till next time, not sure if it will cure yours but its worth a try.

One of this forums members bought a car into us this week for a oil leak which we sorted!

I went to test drive it and only got 100 yards as the box was juddering so bad!!

That is the worst one i have driven so far, its such a common fault now with the early 211,s!!!

This one is still drivable so dont think its gone as bad as it can just yet. I suggested to the garage to change the radiator and flush the system first to see if it cures the problem but they said they cant garanty that the problem will go away and if it doesnt go away after that then ill need to replace the radiator again with the torque convertor and gearbox. By the way the car is a 52 plate.

For the cost of a radiator I'd be tempted to try the flush. Their option seems a bit shotgun maintenance to me. Does anyone know exactly why the coolant is so bad for the box? Is it lack of lubrication or something else?

Yeah thats what i would like to try first but its put me off when they said ill have to change it out again if it doesnt solve the problem. Can anyone confirm if thats the case?

Just to add, when i got the car back from them after they checked it, it felt like it had lost around 100bhp, it lost alot of power when accelerating and didnt drive like the same car i took there, is this common for garages to reduce the power to some kind of ''safe mode''?

S-A-M / U-N-I-T just has, that would be good enough for me. :)

as has been said above sometimes a flush and new oil will cure, and don`t bet it has the valeo rad either, we see this problem on cars without. if it were mine i`d go for drain, flush, filter/oil and blow out the oil cooler, as i said it has worked fine and that was a while back. there is a good post somewhere about removing the oil cooler pipe to flush the torque convertor, as it goes to the cooler from the convertor as this is a big heat generator.

on wis-net there is a long and involved glycol test process with a bespoke MB kit. if the results are below a certain amount of glycol in the oil then wis now reccomends little more than oil change and flush - no rad or torque convertor!
