Yes it can,, best way is to undo a oil cooler pipe, and let the engine run for a few seconds,

The torque converter has a drain plug on it, you will need some body to turn the engine over by hand gently, so when you are under the car you can see the drain plug through the grill on the bottom of the housing, when you change,g/box oil,you should always drain torque converter as well ,you will be surprised how dirty the oil is in it . Its a real mucky job.

There are limits Brian as to what I am willing to do these days, and laying under the car doing this is not something that I will do now.

The mind or the body reacts differently these days, even if the brain is willing:D:D

Just did my oil change on the CLK. When I dropped than pan off I only got +/-4 Litres out. Recently I bought an oil change pump (Pela Pump), so whacked the suction tube into the dipstick hole and managed to get approx another 3L out. Then refilled her. Changes are now sweet.:)

Just to confirm my understanding, you've drained the torque converter using a suction pump down the filler tube? The reason I ask is that this is the first posting I've come across where all the oil (7 litres) has been removed without giving the gearbox a quick spin with the oil cooler pipe disconnected (on those without a torque converter drain plug). I also assumed the oil filler tube went down into the sump (partially due to way the level's measured)?

It does LuLu,take the sump off and the test stick will go all the way through, you will see it under the car

Have to agree with LuLu there, converter and box takes 7 liters, you only take out whats in the sump pan with the pump, you dont empty the whole system!!

Not quite sure how it worked then, but after I dropped the pan, replaced the filter and rolled the car off the ramps I managed to extract more oil before refilling used 6L in total.

Well you changed most of it any, and more than what a MB workshop will have changed
