wionder if anyone here can help -my 2001 e55 has an intermittent problem -when cold, for the first couple of minutes, it's very jerky, and seems to hang on to the gears, under gentle acc. for too long. and then, every so often, it will do the same thing when warm -I had an LPG conversion done a year ago, and that's just been serviced and all is ok -i had this problem before, and the Merc agent changed the 02 sensor which seemed to cure it -they/ve just changed the MAF, but it's still there -naturally the local Merc. dealer. who I have no faith in anyway, is blaming the LPG conversion, but the garage who did the conversion, who are very reputable and have done three ML 55's with no problems, have agajn checked it and said there's no reason it's anything to do with the conversion.- no fault codes are showing on the diagnostic check, so the Merc dealer is of no help -I did think I had the faint smell of eggs last tine it happened, which could indicate the cats going, but i don't know if i imagined it-anybody here had the same problem or got any ideas? -I'm really struggling because Merc are not being at all helpful, and, whilst the LPG dealeres are quite willing to keep investigating, as are my own local garage(not the merc dealers)they are a bit stymied as the most obvious things, i.e the O2 sensor and the MAF have been changed-i'll replace the cats if i have to, but that;s a very expensive option if it's not the answer,
thanks for any help

A common but not easy thing, the car is designed to hang onto the lower gears when cold, and a slightly low battery does not help as starting blips as they are known can happen.

Clearing the gear box of any fault codes can sometimes help,,this does nor sound engine related if no lamp on

As for Malcolm plus don't sorry about the smell of rotten eggs (hydrogen sulphide) with a cold catalytic converter. Not uncommon, but the smell should disappear when it warms up.

Thanks

you're dead right -the rotten egg smell was only the once.when engine cold.so perhaps it's not the cats then! Thanks (hopefully)

iI'm due to take it to a supposed specialist next Monday to see if he can shed any light on it -I've been recommended to him by the LPG dealer as being very very good so fingers crossed.

Problem solved(hopefully)

Well - the specialist had the car for over 2 x weeks -kept getting it nearly right but wasn't totally happy -seemed to know what he was doing though - changed the Maf (again -'cause the one just replaced was faulty -strangely enough, the first two he had were faulty as well, and, since they were the same batch no, as the new faulty one I'd got on, he reckons there's been a faulty batch sent out) -anyway, he eventually got one he was happy with, but it still wasn't right, so he changed the accelerator potentiometer, then the load sensor, then the 02 sensor, and finally all 8 x coil packs - ( the plugs were only changed 1000 miles or so ago on it's last service, so were O.K.)-now it finally seems to be going well -did a round trio from Brownhills to Milton Keynes to St Albans, to Peterborough and back to Brownhills the other day and it went fine - a good mixture of motorway, town and A roads so quite a thorough test - it was especially fine on the rotten A47 from Peterborough to Leicester, when you do need a powerful car to take advantage of the limited overtaking opportunities.
You guys on here are dead right about the running costs of an older E55 though -just totted it up, and I've spent over £3,000 on it in the last month or so, mainly on the service and trying to get it running right -but when you consider a coil pack at £80, and you need 8 of them, it comes dear -but I still think that the car is tremendous value for money -guess you just have to remember that ,when new, it was the most expensive variant of it's model and was never meant to make a case for economical motoring.
