Hi all,
Im new here so forgive me if this has been covered before.
I own a 1996 W210 E300 diesel.... it has the early style engine (the same as fitted to the W124) and some moderate electronics.

Iv been having a problem where the ETS light comes on the dash and at the same time knocks out the ABS.

This can happen when i start the car....
when im sat stationary at traffic lights.. or while im moving on the motorway....

originally i thought it was only happening when it was raining or wet out... and was maybe shorting something out.

anyway the problem is happening day, night, dry and/or wet weather.

the car was due its MOT last month and at the same time required some work done due to fuel problems. i collected it yeasterday after having MOT Prep work done and new tyres fitted and was taking it this morning for the MOT... only to have the ETS/ABS warning light come on again... so i took it to the local merc specialist centre (luckilly 2 miles up the road) and its booked into get checked on tuesday...

now iv read some articles on here detailing similar faults on W210s .. however when i have read about these problems they have tended to be on newer more computerised cars.... or on face lifted e class cars.

so im wondering if anyone can suggest what the problem could be... and how much im likely to be out of pocket....

oh btw im in the UK....
not sure if that matters or not

As the lamp is not on when you start this would indicate that you have a problem on one of the wheel sensors

Right let me explain this in as much detail as possible

when im turning the key.. the engine turns over and erupts into life.. you have all the lights on on the lower end of the dash that gererally all fade out after a few seconds... the ETS and ABS lights remain on... and then the message comes up on the screen you know the one with ETS in big scary letters...

some times it will go to normal .. other times it remains on.. and *keep it to yourself* the speedo doesnt work....

Right iv have the car checked at a garage (not the merc specialist, thats tomorrow) and they couldnt get their diagnostic machine to comunicate due to the age of the car.

However i have been told (and i may have mixed the prices up)

Front Speed Sensor :- £85.00
Rear Speed Sensor :- £95.00

so ill find out tomorrow which one or ones need replaced.

Well its good news....
NOT a speed sensor....
it was the K40 (Is that right?) relay.... so after the diagnostics.. and the replacement K40... was one that was laying about so may not be brand new but am assured its not really really old... worked out at £80.00 so thats not too bad...

No problem since... and i love being able to start her up without worrying about the ABS working
not to mention i can always use the Cruise which is something that has been hit or mis for a while...

Did they give you the old relay? They can oft' be repaired.

nah they didnt... didnt see the point in asking for it.

unfortunitly on my way home from work this morning... the suspension housing on the drivers side colaps through rot.... the bracket has buckeled the 7 month old shock absorber and has me a bit worried aout what to do... im currently pricing parts online before the garage opens...

(Different garage to the place that did the K40...)
i luckilly managed to get the car to the garage and parked it... got the jack out nd loosened the wheel nuts before the support just completly broke away/collapsed...

The odd thing is that the K38 is a starter lockout relay used on some alarms
