So we’re replacing the oil cooler on a ML 420cdi which involves splitting the inlet manifold to remove it. This is what we found. Don’t you just love the egr system. BF3B2BC6-6C80-40A5-8BF3-3BA930ED689E.jpeg FDB2CA12-AB50-4744-8044-7D48985CAC16.jpeg BF3B2BC6-6C80-40A5-8BF3-3BA930ED689E.jpeg

May I ask what is the engine type.
Thats shocking. Is that due to a poor designed engine.

That cannot be normal, the owner must have been running on used chip fat or something similar?

I had the same on mine a few years ago. Discovered it when replacing the cooler seals.

nothing but MB229.51 oil used from new, not a chip pan in sight.

I was actually referring to what went into the diesel tank other than what was recommended by MB? The thread is about the EGR recycling exhaust gasses back through the air intake, nothing to do with engine oil. was yours as bad as this and on what fuel?

If you do a search, I did post pictures and it wasn’t far off being a bad. Certainly the garage were surprised when they did the seals.

And in the 10 years / 120k I have owned it the only additives I have used are Redex & Millers.

surprisinly, despite being partialy blocked - there was no noticeable drop in power / performance.

Well this is by far the worst example I have seen to date, hence my tongue-in-cheek remark about chip fat, frankly I'm shocked there aren't far more discussions about this subject than the DPF if this example is more commonplace than I had previously believed?

With these gradual things you don't tend to notice any drops in performance, what you do notice is the extra ooomppphhh when its all cleaned and put back to together.

2003 ML270 sold but not forgotten. 2022 Kia EV6 RWD LR
My 270 motor was not quite as bad as that at 100K but was quite disgusting. Full cleanout and egr delete and now shining like a new pin.... I originally pulled it apart due to copious black exhaust smoke under load caused by egr valve sticking partially open. Never seen a vestige of black smoke since. I think the system causes more problems than it solves. How many diesels do you see blowing black smoke? Probable cause - egr.
