I cant see the EGR valve putting the car into the limp home mode, it sounds more like the MAF filter needs cleaning/ replacing.

Read the article under engines on how to do it by Parrot.

The EGR valve is a valve that sits in the exhaust manifold. When the car is running light, say motorway this valve opens and returns any harmfull gas back to the intake of the engine. After 70k miles the spring gets weak its operating at 400-600c. Once the spring is weak it could stick in the partly open posistion, this would cause poor idle.

The trade motor press say that it a waste of time trying to clean it,the spring gets weak, this alone can let it get very dirty soon after.

Most people on the forum would rather clean than replace, its hard to get it accross that the spring is weak.

Hope this helps. Malcolm

Yes,do not try and clean it, they cost I think about £70. Thinking since my last answer, I can recall that it did solve another with the same problem.

These things are not made by MB, and it could pay you to check with people like Parts Co,if you can. Much cheaper.
