An oily rag rubbed up and down the aerial was normally the way to get these things working smoothly..have u checked the price of a new antenna..the up and down bit.. from memory these used to be keenly priced .. and are easily fitted in situ

I clean it with a kitchen nylon scouring pad, then use 3 in 1 oil. Needs doing regularly depending on how dirty the car gets.

WD40 is not a lubricant - it doesn't claim to be a lubricant either.
It effectively strips any lubricant off surfaces and replaces it with a thin film - and as you have found out, it works for a while and then you have the same problem again!

Try oil - if that doesn't work, replace the aerial - don't bother with cheap ones from Ebay - they are s**te (I speak from experience)!

nice 201 2.5D 1993 & very nice 129 SL500 1994
Throw it away and fit a fresh one. Unfortunately yours will be irrepairably gummed up with WD40, a compound thats great at water displacement but not very good at any thing else.

Take the good advice already given and replace it. Once they start to stick you have to be at them very regularly keeping them clean and lubed, problem is the lube can attract more cr-p and hence you need more cleaning and so on and on.

Much better than oil is to use a PTFE lubricant on your replacement aerial.
