Im not sure why hydro energy is touted as being so difficult. That Shetland generator seems a bit strange as in using a two bladed prop with large blades. Surely a much smaller prop with 4 blades would give more power?
The generator unit does not have to be submerged, just the propeller (like an outboard engine but in reverse) or how about going back hundreds of years and create a side channel/sluice and a large paddle wheel (water mill) so there is nothing to maintain underwater?
There are many youtubers that have a small stream in their back yard and are generating an impressive amount of energy from a small flow.
A structure like a tube on a cliffside, turbine at the top and the wave action would push air up then suck it down rotating the turbine.. So many possibilities.

The environmental impact of barrier tidal power is very high. They're also prone to silting up.
Direct drive has higher efficiency as there are no gearbox losses.

Prop design dynamics is a revoltingly horrible field of physics that should be left well alone...

perhaps we can lug a small genset around in the boot. is there a real /accurate ,trustworthy read on the green credentials of producing, buying, running, maintaining, disposal of electric cars ? cos i am skeptical as to the "real" difference

Apparently a new law comes into force to state Electric cars must emit a noise https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-48815968

Hmm, lets see the manufacturers have a field day with one, so that drivers can choose to make their car sound like an Italian V6, Ferrari V12, American V8, Formula 1 car or perhaps a Bugatti Chiron.

I do think that electric cars should emit a noise in urban areas and country lanes but, do not see the need for it to be on all the time such as carriageways and motorways.

It's only required below 12mph.

Apparently it is to be active at 12mph or less, but does not state what sort of noise..
They tried a space ship noise which was amusing, but everyone looked up !
Jaguar have developed the ultimate noise in order to hear direction and speed, but its not nice and hundreds of traffic bound cars will sound appaling..
How about teaching the younger generation the green cross code instead, then maybe they will actually bother to look first.
Not sure how a noise in a city centre would ever be heard in the first place above all the background noise?

That’s exactly what range extended hybrids are. A car with a big battery and a genset.

Very approximately, a traditional diesel or petrol car has 30% of its total lifetime energy budget tied up in its manufacture with the balance expended as burnt fuel in its lifetime, and then a fairly small 1-2% outlay at the back end for recycling.

Now, an EV is significantly more energy efficient in running than an ICV so let’s assume while it’s 30% is equal to the traditional car, the 70% is smaller. Much smaller, more like 20-30%.

If we assume that emissions and green-ness etc are equal, then the EV wins out by virtue of mains power generation being more efficient than a dedicated IC engine

What I don’t have is any data on battery production; it’s not a horrendous process nowadays though AIUI.

They can refine the lithium from seawater which has made reserves significantly larger and easier to get to.

It’s the energy expenditure more than anything else really. The mining is pretty efficient all told.

So here we have a diesel van with a petrol generator charging an electric car

The future is bright

yeh, but.. good comedy is worth repeating ;):D:cool:

There were only 12 episodes of Fawlty Towers, that were domiciled in JBell's part of the world. The external 'hotel' shots were filmed at the old Wooburn Green Grange casino and club.

The hotel is a mile from my place (Glenagles Hotel), it is now old folks flats but called Sachs House in honour of him
