Hi all,
My 1990 300TE 4matic has just developed a problem with the electric windows. The windows will open from inside the car but wont close, to close the windows i have to get out and use the central locking. Needless to sayi had a rather windy drive home down the motoway with window full down!
Thanks,
Paul

thats really weird

does it apply to all the windows or just one?

obviously the actual motors and gears do work as you can do it centrally.

I cant offer much help but I am thinking either rsome sort of switch or wiring connection problem with the internal switches OR presumably there is a safety stop on the windows going up (to stop trapped head/fingers etc) so maybe this has gone wrong in some way but is not an issue when you are not in the car - ie central locking.

what happens if you use central locking when sitting in the car (apart from setting off the alarm!) do the windows go up?

Paul, You need to supply a little more info.

Is it all the windows?

Can you shut & open them by holding the key turned in the door lock? (comfort control)

Will they work with the door open?

Why did you drive down the motorway with them open, when you can close them with the fob?

Did you try a reset, holding up switch up for 5 seconds when they are closed?

Although I do suspect switch control as with keith

Thanks all for your help, i have solved the problem but totaly baffled both my local MB dealer a independent and a auto electrican........

All the windows would go down from inside the car but none would go up.They would go up when you used the c/l from the key. I then discovered the next day that the sunroof didnt operate at all and neither did the wipers/ wash wipe or the full beam flash. By accident i found that if either frount door was open the windows and sunroof operated fine, but the wipers and flash still didnt work! I was advised that it was a relay problem(new one fitted problem remained)i was told possible earth/wireing problem MB would take a look at £90 per hr,independent advised a auto electrican who was baffled and stated he would rather not take the job on and said i would be better off with MB dealer! i was pulling my hair out by this point lol.
I got out the haynes manual and studied the wireing went back to the car and rechecked the fuse responsible for the wipers......it was very slightly melted so that the plastic caseing was partly covering the contacts i replaced the fuse and problem sorted!
I phoned my MB dealership to tell them the problem was sorted and what it was they were as amazed as i was!!
I still dont quite understand how a fuse could be responsible as other functions operated via that fuse(acording to my trusty manual)worked fine....still am gratefull for the problem to be solved.

I should state that i am a fairly new to MB's and am still learning mainly by reading the informative information in the forums! I knew the windows/sunroof shut when the key was held in lock but wasnt aware that this was a comfort pack lol, i assumed that they all came with this. As for a fob i dont have one, should i have one? I presume the car has a alarm or imobizer fitted as standard as when i remove the key i hear a few beeps, but have never heard it go off so dont know for sure.
I was givern limited information when i purchased the car and only provided with 1 key, i must confess to buying the car in a rush as a aniversary present for my wife. And both she and i are very pleased with our MB so far!

Paul,

Each week on these forums, there are several problems solved with cracked or coroded fuses. one yesterday another today.

Take my advice and replace all the fuses (pennys each) and clean all the contacts. Those pill type fuses in your car are notorious for failing, after a given amount of years.

This situation in your fusebox could have caused an arc accross the fused circuit, and burned out the whole wiring harness
